My son gave me this revolver for Christmas. He purchased it from a friend and does not have any ideal of age, or value. I am curious to what I have here for I can see this revolver has been around awhile.

It seems to be in good condition, it does have a little side to side movement and end play in the cylinder, I believe it would be safe to fire. There is no rust pitting that is deep. I do not know how to add pictures to this thread.

This is what is written on the gun on the barrel:

Colt 41A
Colt PT FA mfc
Hartford, Ct. USA
pat Aug 5 84 Nov 6 88 Mar5 95

Under the crane 488
488 on cylinder release

On the butt
186

You apparently have a Colt Model 1892 New Army/Navy that was made during 1902. It is chambered in .41 Long Colt. Cartridges are in theory available but not easy to find, and expensive if you do. I strongly suggest that you do not shoot it, given its age. If some internal part should break getting it repaired could also be expensive. You may notice that some parts are stamped with a partial serial or assembly number. This is because those parts were individually fitted to that particular gun.

The barrel marking is 41 D.A. standing for "Double Action."

Be nice to see pictures of your old Colt. The one on GunBroker is priced optimistically, I think, although the ivory grips are nice. I'm more familiar with S&W revolvers, but the GunBroker one appears to have been refinished and is in rough shape even so.

Condition counts for a great deal in determining a value. Again, pictures similar to the series of the GunBroker revolver would be great.

Thanks for all responses. I am trying to post pictures, if not successful I will try again.

Hi, dfariswheel,

Excellent article. There is a lot of misinformation on those guns, so it is good to see the correct story for a change.

Researching this revolver has been both rewarding and frustrating. I have found that people think highly of Colts and want to preserve the history they represent. I consider myself blessed to have one.

Here are a few pictures.
