Question #1:

Das, for the 1861 do you think it would be better to use rub on or spray on True Oil on the grips?

Question #2:

I have been wondering is it bad to file the hammer down horizontally? I have been reluctant to do that. It seems like the hammer is designed to keep the cap junk from flying around and that altering it could be a bad move.

The reason that I wanted to horizontally file the hammer was so that the sights would more easily line up with the correct (deepest) aiming position of the newly modified sights.

Ummm , if'n your going with Tru-Oil on the grips , either one will be fine , its such a smalll area to oil , it isn't a problem with the hand applied bottle of oil .
If your looking for high gloss , I suppsoe the last coat sprayed on would be your best bet , but I can achieve the same result buffing it back up with Brownelss 5F pollish . It's a crapshoot man , either will work just fine .

Can't answer question #2 have never done that , I don't think ? I also am not completely sure what your talking about filing Horizontally ? Explain with pictures, I am stupid , need paint by numbers to understand you

You can deepen the V notch in the hammer (rear sight) it's difficult because it's case hardened. I have done a few in a mill and I cut a square notch. Just cutting .030 deeper makes a difference on POI.

Several of my Colt repros shot high. I have both deepened & widened the rear notch (with a Dremel cutting wheel) and ground down the top of the hammer (on a bench grinder) to "lower" the rear sight. It improves the sight picture and makes the gun shoot POA.

I have the guns tuned up and ready to go. I have 8000 acres of state land in back of my house. I have not found the rabbits yet. There is lots of coyote scat they may be thin to non existent on this plot. (they gotta be there somewhere I just haven't found them yet.

The search continues.

the Coyote wouldn't be there if there were no rabbits more than likely . Did ya check the Yote scatt for furr or bone ? I know , I know, I know you don't like putting your finger in poop , but its the only way to see if your hunting grounds is furtile .
You should see Bunny poop too somewhere if they are there too obviously
