I asked this question about three weeks ago: Question Change a Colt from 38 Super to 45ACP?

Your answers were lots of machining, new barrel, new ejector, new extractor and the slide will no longer work with 38 Supers. So that was a no go.

Now I am thinking about a Colt Commander, any variant, LT WT, SS, or Blue Steel in 9mm. These are very hard to find but 45ACP ones are not. Now pretty much the same question, is changing a 45 Commander to a 9mm Commander as involved as the 38 Super to 45ACP or is it easier?

Also who could do this, and how much (rough ballpack estimate) would it cost me? Also would it be better to buy all the part I would need to do it and then send it to a gunsmith or would letting the gunsmith pick the parts he likes to work with be better?

You would need a new slide, barrel, ejector, extractor and someone to fit it all up. This is a project that is not worth the investment. 9mm Commanders aren't that rare, and it will be a LOT cheaper to find one and buy it.

Know Ted Yost has done a number of guns with both .45 and 9mm top ends. Might inquire with him as to cost?

Colt 9mm Comm's. may not be rare but took me quite a while to find one in good and reasonable shape to use as a "shooter" and IDPA gun. Still had to pay $600.00 for it, but thought it was worth it in the end.
