Looking to replace the original plastic grips on a Colt Commando to preserve the originals and to find something a little more attractive. I understand that Colt Pythons are designed on the same basic frame. Some people say the grips will work on each other. Will any Python grip work on the Commando? I'm looking for some classic looking wooden service style grips. Also trying to find a decently priced leather holster if anybody has suggestions.

Hunter's medium framed holster, with a retention strap is about the cheapest leather still around. If you are going with a molded one you will likely have to go Colt specific since the Army Special/Official Police/Commando is a sort of .41 framed gun.

Any grip specified for the above names should work. CDNN's on-line catalog has some decent wooden grips that are reasonable.

That's all well intended.

But more original grips, rifle sights, etc. have been separated from guns and lost to collectors by doing what you suggest then probably any other reason.

Despite your good intentions to keep the grips with the gun, at some point in time they will end up in a box of junk at an estate auction.

And get sold for $2 bucks to someone who collects boxs of junk, and never heard of a Colt Commando in his life!

Thats a good point rcmodel. I am having a difficult time tracking any decent replacement grips down anyway, I might just keep the originals on. Will the old plastic hold up after 65 years? I intend to make this a shooter not just sit in a closet. There is another Colt OP that is nickel plated with a family inscription on it I dont really want to fire that one that often.

You might check with Herrett Stocks, since they custom make revolver stocks based on a tracing of the frame, rear of trigger guard, plus the serial number and make and model. Some grips also need a tracing of the shooter's hand. Don't know what you're looking to spend, but they can probably make a set of stocks for your old Commando.

The Commando is Colt's military version of the Official Police.m This is the old .41 Colt frame. The same frame is used for the Commando, Official Police, M357 and Python. Grips for those guns are identical.
