I recently acquired a Colt Commando Special; from what i have read this is a Detective Special without the higher-end finish.
I would like to buy a set of wood grips (it has the rubber grips now) but want grips that would allow for a tyler t-grip.
Could someone tell me what frame size i have? And any recommendations as to where to buy grips would be appreciated.

The 1980s Colt Commando was a dull finish Detective Special. Maybe one of those union strike guns assembled by salaried employees while the polishers were on a picket line. It is a D frame revolver.

If you have an original WWII Commando, it is the Army version of Official Police, the E frame.

It's hard to find grips for the later "D" frames that will allow a Tyler adaptor. Most of the available grips are combat type that fill in behind the trigger guard.

The best choice would be some of the old style round butt "Service" type grips. Colt used this type from 1966 to 1973 that will fit your later Colt
Note that you have a post-1966 "stubby" grip "D" frame model. The older grips will not work because most of those were made for the old long grip frame models.
The later grips as used on your Commando Special overlap on the bottom to provide a longer grip.

Gungrip.com offer several types that would fit, but most are synthetic. The wood models only fit the old style long grip frame.

Here's how the post-1966 Colt "D" frame Service type grips were made to overlap on the bottom......

You might watch eBay and the gun auction sites for a set, but be careful not to buy the old long frame type grips.
Of course you could buy a old long frame type glue on a piece of walnut to fill in the gap on the bottom.
Some of the later Colt grips had a piece of walnut glued to only one grip to fill in.
