Colt Defender

Personally I think my full freight 357 loads in a 4" 686 kick a whole lot more than my 45s. I don't have any 40 caliber experience, but being the chamber pressures are quite a bit higher than the 45 I would suspect it snaps harder than the 45.

So far the Kimber ultra carry looks like the one to get......already comes with all the bells n whistles, but seen threads where Kimber has been getting a bad rap.

Perceived recoil is such a subjective issue. A polymer framed gun vs aluminum framed vs steel framed in the same caliber will produce different felt recoil to different people. I wish someone would do a double blind test (where neither the shooter or tester would know what caliber is being tested). I think there would be some interesting results.

Another vote for 45acp.

Recoil is a lot less than you would think, and accuracy well above average.

Steel -

I'm really liking those grips you got there. Where did you get them if you don't mind me asking?

To the OP, I love my Defender in 45 ACP, but it can be a bit to handle unless you are in the right frame of mind. I'm 6'3" and 260 lbs and it can wear you out. I'd really really love to have a New Agent or Defender in 9mm though. Compare ammo prices and you will know what I mean. Oh, and plan on getting that extractor tuned. Those darn 45 spent shell casing hitting you in the forehead can really hurt sometimes. Be sure to have a hat on when you shoot it.

Considering you are sort of straying away from what a true 1911 is anyway with a 3" barrel, going the next step with a 9mm ain't that big a deal. Heck get one of each if you gotta have a 45. For that matter, get a 5" 45 and a Defender in 9mm. I ain't made of money either but save you pocket change and it can happen.

Good luck.

I'm a .45 and .357 guy - never liked the 9mm too much. If you practice enough the odds of needing the additional capacity the 9mm offers in a self defense situation is pretty nonexistant in my opinion.

I just went through the exercise of purchasing a new .45acp defense gun and finally after much research and deliberation picked the 4" XD45 compact. It really wasn't too much larger than the small frame 1911's and fit my hand well.

On the 1911 topic - I'm really a JMB purist at heart and have mixed feelings of the shortened models. Some people have never had a malfunction while I've read about people with prematurely worn recoil springs, snapped guide rods, poor feeding, etc...
