Colt Gold Cup or S&W1911DK

I have always liked the Colt Gold Cups; even tho' the Ellison rear sight is
very fragile; but as new firearms go, its hard too beat the S&W 1911's~!

So, take your pick-and spend your $$$$ wisely.

I own the S&W, and I'm happy there. Worth the $$$.

But there was a time not too long ago when I looked at a new Gold Cup as a potential addition to the stable.

It was new, but what I found discomforting was a noticable looseness in the slide to frame fit. I literally could rock the slide from left to right on the frame when it was in battery.

Not a lot, mind you, but more than I've become used to.

Even the salesperson agreed when I pointed it out to him.

Please note that this was but a single sample, and it may not apply to the next Gold Cup, but it will be something I will at least look for in the future.

Reason I'm asking is...I'm on my third Gold Cup. Love the Colts. (The Trophy does have a loose slide....but it's extremely accurate & reliable). I'm considering buying the S&W DK or a Blue Gold Cup.
Was looking for reasons not to buy the Smith. Seems positive so far. Thanks, Frank

What are the 'extras' that come on these 1911's that would differ from the standard model, and compared against eachother? For example, the Colt comes with a wider trigger which you may or may not like.

I had 2 80's. 1 Blue, 1 Stainless. Sold em...miss em. Bought the new Stainless Trophy as a replacement. Was thinking about buying another( Blue Trophy) as mentioned...but the Smith looks tempting and would be something different

I like the Smith a lot but you might want to figure resale value into the equation. All other things being equal (like condition), the Colt 1911 will almost always fetch more money if you ever decide to sell it.

Did a 180 today. Ordered a Springfield PX9152 Target Black Stainless instead. I have a stainless Gold Cup so I thought I'd try something different. Hope it shoots as good as it looks... it's a beaut.

Great pick! If it don't shoot as good as it looks, fitting a barrel bushing, isn't too hard

My loaded fullsize needed it, tightened up my groups big time

I have really good experiences with the Colts I've bought in the last couple of years. All are top rate. They include:

Colt Series 70
Colt Special Combat Government
Colt WW1 Reproduction

I do like the Smith & Wesson 1911's and had one but had to sell it when I was diagnosed with cancer. My only beef with the Smith, and it's a personal thing, is I don't care for the external extractor.

I will say in my neck of the woods at least, the Smith autos don't have good resale value should you need to sell it. They are fine guns IMHO.

Pro Series S&W1911

I was going to get the S&W1911DK, but S&W customer service talked me out of it. They said the DK (on the $1000 model DK) was just a cosmetic package and added nothing to the gun quality. C.S. recommended spend less on a different model for the same level gun, or spend a little more and truly step up in gun. I spent a little more and ordered the Pro Series 1911 from S&W, but it isn't in yet so I can't actually compare it to anything else.

I have been very happy with my SW1911s. That surprised me. I was not expecting to be. I got into them as good deals on trade fodder on yet to be acquired Colts. I shot the SW1911s, and not only did I keep them, but I also got a SW1911PD for carry.

I still have my Colts. Colt is still my preference, but my experience with SW1911s has been 100% positive. I just wish they would give up the spotted zebra look.

Beef44 makes a valid point on the resale value. Colts tend to hold value and appreciate. SW1911s are not doing that.......yet.

My next 45 will be a S&W 1911. I might look into a 1911PD and build it a little.

I much prefer the Gold Cup -- esp the older ones. Plus, the external extractors of the Smiths just seem wrong to me
