Colt Lawman Mark 3 Grips

Some time ago I acquired a Colt Lawman Mark 3- this is the 4" barrel gun. I have shot it enough to decide that I will keep it- to that end, is there a source for smooth wood, finger-groove grips for this gun?

I don't care for the way the checkering on the factory grips is somewhat abrasive (at least in my opinion) and can only find the Pachmayr presentation grips so far in my searching.

I don't really want to go after the factory grips on the gun with a file and sandpaper at this point, in case I ever do want to trade/sell the gun in the future. I guess I could always buy a set of replacement factory grips from Gunbroker and work on those but they seem kind of pricey...

Grips are not hard to make.

I cut scrap walnut on a bandsaw, with a generous outline of the finished grip, then put the gun on the walnut blank and trace the grip.

Cut inside the tracing line with a 1/8" veiner and cut away everything inside the groove. I have a Dremel with a stand, and I simply chuck in a router bit and hold the blank on the table of the stand and make cuts about the thickness of a sheet of paper.

Mark the hole for the grip screw in one grip, then put the grips together and drill through to make sure the grips line up.

I use a bench sander to shape the grips, and do the fine work with a drum sander in my Dremel. I leave the grips rough-sanded (works much better than checkering, actually) and finish with tung oil. Hogue and several other grip companies make finger groove grips for the 4" Lawman.

The 4" Lawman (NOT the 2" version) used the same grips as the Trooper Mark III.

I'm working on getting the Jordans for my latest find, a Trooper MK III. Had one 30 years ago, and had forgotten how the checkering felt when shooting. I had made my own grips from rosewood using a rasp and sandpaper.

I never really cared for the factory grips either on my Trooper Mk.III. The dimensions seemed all wrong for my hand, and the checkering was too sharp. I picked up a pair of Pachmayrs with the Colt medallion on them and found them to be a great alternative to the original grips. The strange thing was, when the Trooper Mk.V came out, I loved the factory grips. Different contours and no checkering made a world of difference.
