COLT LE901 vs LMT/308 MWSE

I don't like the fact that the Colt has a proprietary charging handle that prevents you from using aftermarket (e.g. Bravo Company "Gunfighter" model), charging handles.

Colt also serves you up the same old junk trigger that you might find in the cheapest Hesse-build. For a $2,000 rifle, I would think they could do better than that. So add the cost of a decent trigger to the total cost of the rifle.

Depends on what you want the rifle for. The MWS seems to be set up as more of a precision rig and the Colt more of a gerneral battle rifle.

The MWS was chosen by the Brits as a marksmans rifle and have had good success with in in Afghanistan.

The LMT is setup for quick barrel changes in 7.62 and the 901 is set up for a quick (sorta) upper change between 7.62 and 5.56.

Neither one well have the accuracy of a 18-21" stainless barreled 7.62 AR.

I'm leaning heavily to the LMT and I'm only interested in the 16" barrel.

The Colt intrigued me because of name brand and the ability to change out the upper.

I have the LMT MWS with 20” Barrel setup with a Leupold Mark 3.5-10x scope. With 175gr SMK hand loads I am get under 1-MOA groups at 100yrds and with 175gr SMK Federal Gold Medal Match I’m getting about 1 to 2 MOA groups at 100yrds. And please note that my rifle has a Chrome Lined barrel, so I would say that a model with the R5 Stainless Steel match barrel might do even better.

Of course, there is also the LWRCI REPR to consider, the HK417, the FNMK20 SSR, and the SIG716. All great systems in pretty much the same price range.

But the LMT is still calling my name...

The LMT is heavy and poorly balanced as in too front heavy. I haven't handled one of the Colts.

I'd rather have a REPR or better yet a SCAR heavy but they are more expensive as well.

2 different rifles.

The LMT is a DMR and an excellent one at that, it is used by the British designated the L129A1. The LMT beat the SCAR, HK417, and one other rifle in all categories(reliability, durability, and accuracy)

The Colt is a battle rifle along the lines of the MK17(scar-h). With the right ammo it can get man size MOA out to 1000Yards, looserounds.com has an excellent review and it is currently being adopted by the border patrol.

Selection by one military doesn't exactly prove one rifle to be better than others. If it did then either the Brits chose the wrong standard issue infantry rifle or we did.

The L129A1 has seen a ton of combat so far and has nothing but stellar reviews from those issued it.....also alot of the Brits I have spoken to wish they would have adopted the M4 as their standard issue rifle as well.

That only reinforces my point. If the British weapon selection method was proof that the LMT is better than its competitors, and the British did not choose the M4, then one would have to believe that the L85 is superior to the M4.

Different times.

The L129 trials was a fair and open competition. The L85 trials were not.

The L85 was fully built and tested in house and then adopted. It was adopted 5 years before the M4 came out and 15yrs before the US Army adopted the M4. There was no competition to see what was better than the SA80 family, it was built, tested then adopted.

The L129A1 competed in numerous trials against 3 other rifle and beat them all.

the Brits are using a .308 LMT in the same role as the SEALs are using the SCAR 17. Has a 5.56 conversion for the SCAR17 been developed yet or is that still maybe in the works?

The brits are using the LMT in the same way the SEALS are using the MK20.

The MK17 is generally a 10" battle rifle or around there, more inline with the Colt 901.

All the short barreled Mk17s I have seen have bad the 13 inch barrel. I shot one a few months back and I can't remember there being enough barrel left to make a 10 inch rifle.

I'm most interested in the 16" version.
The LMT, HK 417 (MR308) and the Mk17 (SCAR-H) have all seen successful service in combat over the last few years. Any of them will work well for you and be accurate.

The LMT has proven to be a 1-1.5 MOA gun with the standard chrome lined barrel and sub MOA with a stainless barrel. I believe the SCAR-H has show to be a 1.5-2 MOA rifle and I haven't seen very many reports on the HK MR308.
