I wonder if Colt still makes a M1991A1 Commander? I was thinking of a hard chrome, dual caliber and replaced MIM pistol.

Commander

Howdy Josey,

Yep. Colt still makes Commanders...steel or alloy frame...but the dual caliber that you want probably won't work, at least not without a lotta work and cussin'. Aside from the difference in ejectors and slidestops,
the feed ramp geometry and dimensions aren't compatible between the two calibers.

The hard chrome would be a gunsmith project.

Hope this helps,

Tuner

A gunsmith friend showed me a little project. A Colt M1991A1 was used to build a interchangable system. 45 ACP, 38 Super and 9MM on one frame. Hard chromed. Night sights. Hogue wraparound rubber fingergroove grip and bumpers for the mags. I was drooling. Commander hammer and Videcki skeleton trigger. Smooth.

I recall an old American Rifleman article describing a .45 - .38 Super convertible Combat Commander. It worked easily because, unlike Government Models, all Commanders have .38 ejectors, even the .45s. Apparently the feed ramp was compatible, too. Slide stops aren't expensive.

Jim, that was the information I was given. I am still looking for a 9 MM 5" M1991A1 too. I have another gunsmith friend that put together a 9 MM and 38 Super interchangable uppers. He said that it went together so easily it amazed even him. I have had a few multicaliber single action revolvers, semi-autos seem feasible. The CZ Kadets and EAA semis can do it. I think that it could be a way for manufacturers to make more money. I could easily see S&W 1911s being sold as sets of a commander frame and multiple top ends.

Good luck finding that M1991A1 in 9mm. I traded for one in 1994 only to see it stolen in 2003. It was serial number 000299. I don't think many were made.

So far, I am 3/18 on the guns coming back to me. One of the three is still in the Contra Costa County Courthouse's evidence room (Browning High Power) until the perp's appeals are over. Maybe someday the Colt will come back too.
