So I picked up my Mustang today and started to field strip it. First off I HATE THE DOUBLE RECOIL SPRINGS! Second has anyone else had trouble getting the barrel out of the slide? Mine likes to stick when lifting it out. So much that it takes a little more force then what I'm used to for getting a barrel out. I guess I have a third question too, Cylinder and Slide has a steel guide rod and single recoil spring pack that they sell for $42. The recoil spring they sell seperate for 7$ which is a Wolff so I assume it's about that much but is the steel guide rod worth $34? And does anyone else sell Mustang replacement parts like this? Thanks.

I have a Pony, which is the double action Mustang. I have the metal guide rod also, and found out it was hitting the slide, making a burr in the guide rod. Fixed it, and am monoriting it. Don't know why it is doing it. Any sugustions?
It takes a little practice to get the barrel out, it is tight! I have had no problems in cycling, so I have not put new springs in. I have the old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fool with it.....I did fuff and buff the insides, with my paddle stones. I also went and smooth out the rails of tool marks. Don't like aluminum and steel rubbing without a smooth surface. I also use grease on the rails for smooth cycling and lubercation.
With my CPP, (CCW), I have a Allisa pocket holster for it and carry in the front pocket. It seems to sometimes turn sideways in the pocket, and I don't like it. Should get one from R J Headley, he is an artist. His is larger, and don't seem to turn in the pocket, and the grip is free.
If you have problems, I would try Wolf springs, if not leave it alone.....

Wolff now sell guide rod and spring for about 1/2 C&L price. There is nothing wrong with the plastic rod You will have more trouble out of the metal one Spring change good idea .Rod change you decide. Remember these are not target pistols and like the orginal 45 they were made for SD They are dependable as they came from factory Other than spring change I'd leave it a lone. my 02.

Pull the mag. out make sure chambers empty and look in back base of grip. See if there's a yellow clip close to base holding the flat sear spring in. There was a recall on the .380 Colts years ago for the spring popping out. Answer was the clip. I've had a few Mustangs, and one Pony. Everbody loves them, but I never could get used to them. Never push the ejector down past the point necessary to remove the slide. If you push it down past the point where it engages the combo sear / ejector spring you will have a real fun time getting it hooked up again.

I had a smith in NC melt mine and do a fluff and buff. My wife fired it once and I have not seen it since.

My wifes pistol has the steel guide rod that came from Scott MacDougal. I am not sure if they are in business any more. We got the slide spring from wolf.

That thing about the barrel being in there tight is interesting. It is a characteristic of the pony and the pocket 9 is the same way. With practice you can (for lack of a better description) wiggle it a bit and it will drop right in and come out as easily.

Thanks for the help guys!

Popeye: I had run across the clip thing while doing a search so it's been checked. It does have it.

Also does anyone know if a metal trigger replacement was ever made? I just don't like having plastic anywhere but in the grips.

Since they stopped makeing many years ago . The after market has kinda went away. I have never had any trouble with the plastic in my mustang. Mine is from 80's and still has all orginal plastic guide rod, trigger. Now I don't shoot 500 rounds a week more like 200 a year Its a pocket pistol for close up SD not to shoot matches. It has never malfuntioned as it came from factory. Only problem Ive ever has is mag release spring from factory is weak and needs replaced with a stronger spring. Last year I replaced the springs with a wolff spring kit. Other than that and a set of sim. ivory grips mine is as factory.

Mac Scott retired and left the shop to Dave MacDougal who has since passed away. Scott had another website where he was still selling some parts, but AFAIK it is closed now. :(

Just had it out shooting today, dang is this gun nice. Recoil is minimal, I don't even need that pinky on the gun after all. The only problem I had with it was I bumped the magazine release one time and popped the mag out. One thing I did have to get used to, can anyone else feel the magazine move when you fire the gun? I'm sure it was just from the pressure of the slide going back over the magazine but after having the mag pop out once I kept worrying about it.

The Mag release springs are weak and if you hit botton will pop mag. Wolff has a stronger spring and it helps but can still happen. I haven't found a really strong spring yet. Ive considdered getting another Mag release and grinding down button. to reduce chance of hitting. If any one knows of a stronger spring than wolff please tell us.

Natchez Shooter Supply used to have parts for the colt mustang and gov't model 380's. They had them on clearance a couple of months back. I don't know what they have left.

I've shot mine a couple of times. Got it off gunbroker for a little over $400. I was so surprised to find how mild the recoil is. Great shooting little gun. Only had to put a little tension on the extractor.

I don't know why colt would discontinue them. They sure are sweet. Maybe they just want to build up a demand again, and then they'll re-introduce them for a couple of years. We can at least hope.
