Colt New Agent purchase?

I have an opportunity to pick up a in very good condition New Agent 45 for about 400.00. My only issues are the following:


1) the trench sight, not familiar with it. How is it for accuracy in a CQB/SD situation?

2) It seems to be a bit of a PIA to field strip and reassemble, is there tool or something I am missing?

Any and all thought, opinions and comments welcome, please advise as I don't think it will be available long at the price.

If I could get my hands on a New Agent auto for $400 I'd jump on it. Having only played with one, the sight was just a little odd, but because the gun pointed naturally for me appeared to come right into place.
 
4400.00!? Sounds spendy to me. Personally, I don't like Government sights at all especially for SD. I have a nice RIA thet is GI trim and the sights suck even though I can shoot it well, I would never carry it unless I have the sights swapped out to target sights or at least Novaks. I actually prefer adjustable target sights for sd....weird.
 
Look in this forum's archives using the search feature (in the green bar toward the top of the page, on the right side).

Use the key word "shoulder point" or "point shooting."

The pistol you are looking at was designed to be used in this kind of shooting (up close/and fast). It works very well for the purpose, but not so well otherwise.

You will either like it or not. There doesn't seem to be much middle ground.

As OF said, you will have to learn "point shoulder" shooting, or read up on Jim Cirillo's "Silhouette Point" technique. These techniques, IMO, have their place, but I personally don't wish to be restricted to them.

:confused: I am not aware of it being any different or more difficult to strip than any other 1911.

If you buy it and don't like it, at only $400 you can probably resell it for a profit. :D
 
For $400 get it if you do not like it I will give you $500 for it shipped to my FFL. :)
 
Great deal. It strips down without tools. It feels more difficult to you due to the recoil spring system. You could have traditional sights installed and still come out ahead on what a new Defender would cost you. I would just live with the current setup and point shoot. Or, trade it towards something else.
 
For $400 there wouldn't be any issues for me, I'd already have it and be bragging on my incredible deal. Even if you hate it you can make a 50% profit tomorrow.

Oh yeah, if you decide to pass over your "issues" how about hooking me up with the seller?

An interesting point. However, I would be leery of cutting dovetail slots across an already existing groove. This might weaken the slide, but it would take a gunsmith to answer that. And, while I am normally a proponent of function over form, it would almost certainly look like crap.
 
I *loved* my New Agent. the sights are great once you get used to them, but don't expect that to happen in three rounds or anything.

There would be no negative issues. No way it would weaken the slide. Have you ever seen lightening cuts? Beauty is in the eye of the holder.
 
Get it swabie! any Colt is worth $400. especially in 45. CQB sounds like no sights would work fine, they would probably slow you down if you had em.

Kimber had 1 streamlined, and with a trench sight. It may be in response to that model , they have sold quite a few. Trench sights aren't new they drag them out ever so often.

$400 a steal for new Agent even used They sell for 900 last I looked I have a early one you must shoot to learn the sight Once learned it is more than accurate enough for SD Its not a target pistol It takes down like a Defender almost same pistol Agent has thin grips no beaver tail and the trench sight.I take a small piece of card board Push recoil plug out front slip cardboard in place . This will hold recoil spring assembly forward enough That link will drop down and reassemble the pistol

Mine has shot every thing I have tried I don't shoot reloads so no help their I carry with the 185 gr DPX I like the copper HP.
 
JUMP on it NOW! VERY good price. Mine has always been 100% reliable and is oh, SO easy to carry concealed. Sighting arrangement is very fast to achieve POA and is way more accurate than it has any right to be with 'no' sights.

It isn't a range gun, a hunting arm nor a target piece. For what it is (CC piece) is is fantastic.
 
I've got one with the Crimson trace laser grips- works great. If you shop around , you can sometimes find those grips for $200. I also installed a arched mainspring housing and a Wilson beaver tail grip safety.
 
I have a New Agent and took to the trench sights immediately, shooting at self defense distances, IE: 20 feet or less, and producing 6 inch patterns shooting off-hand. Now while that is not target accuracy, it is all the SD accuracy I need to defend myself.
A range buddy has the Defender, which is, of course, the same size only complete with classic three dot sights and comes in stainless steel.
I am no more accurate off-hand with the Defender and while I would prefer a stainless gun, the Agent is more compact, and has a grooved fore strap which helps cement the gun into my grasp.
