I just bought a colt new army model 1892 in 38 long colt. Can I shoot 38 special through this gun. Thanks in advance.

NO.
First, I don't think the .38 Special will chamber, and second, these old Colt's were never intended for the more powerful round.

Even if the Special will chamber...... don't.

The only 1892 Colt that I ever saw had chambers bored all the way through and you could put a .357mag in there. Use only the Short and Long colt cartridges. DO NOT use .any others. Quantrill

Quantrill is correct. Those guns have no shoulders in the chambers and the .38 Special (I am not sure about .357 because of its length) will fit and fire. But the guns were made for the less powerful cartridge we call the .38 Long Colt. If these are not available, .38 Special can be loaded down using .38 S&W loading data. The .38 Long Colt had a 150 grain bullet at 730 fps; the .38 Short Colt had a 130 grain bullet at the same velocity.

I have fired .38 Special mid-range wadcutters (148 grain bullet / 760 FPS) cartridges in Colt 1892 series revolver without any problems. The hollow-base bullet expands to fit in the oversized bore and since the bullet is flush with the front of the case they will fit the chambers without any problems. This particular loading is similar to the .38 Long Colt in bullet weight, chamber pressure, and velocity.

THIS IS THE ONLY .38 SPECIAL LOAD THAT I WOUND FIRE IN ONE OF THOSE OLD COLTS, AND SINCE I CANNOT EXAMINE THE CONDITION OF ANOTHER PERSON'S REVOLVER I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THOSE THAT MAY TRY IT.
