I was browsing a local shop here when I happened across a Colt Officer Model (I believe thats what it was called) that had pre war on the tag. It was a nice looking gun, little bluing missing but I didnt handle it so I dont know how tight it was. The tag was 250.

Now Im on this classic revolver kick right now and really like this gun but dont know much about it. It had a thin barrel probably 3-4 inches long and nice stock looking wood grips. If it turns out to be in good mechanical shape would it be a good buy or should I keep looking around for something like a nice old Smith?

Then it isn't an Officer's Model, which is a target revolver with good stout six inch barrel.

$250 might be a good price, depending on what it really is and the actual condition.

Officer's Model Target (adjustable sights usually 6" barrel). At $250 a fantastic deal.

Official Police. Fixed sight service revolver. Same frame and action as above. Usually 4, 5 or 6" barrel. At $250 decent but not great.

OK it looked a lot like the second picture. I probably got the names mixed up, there were a few officer, patrolman, police and official revolvers there. Hard time keeping track of which is which without writing it down. Haha.

So the consensus is, if its in good working order, that it would be a good buy at a decent price?

$250 is reasonable for a decent 4" OP.

Lots of Colts have cop names. It does get confusing.
