Hi all,
I have a friend that is selling a Colt OP. He's asking $100 for it. since i'm not a revolver guy, i don't know if that's a high or low price for what he has. the serial number is 64xxx. No box. He inherited it from a relative that passed away. any info would be appreciated.

As Q says, it is a Police Positive Special, not an Official Police.
An old one, 1912 according to Proofhouse.com
Finish is not great, but if the action is sound and the chambers and bore bright, it is surely worth $100+.

should also add that the relative that passed away was a Officer, so this may have been his duty gun.

so $100 is fair?

I had one similar to yours that I got at a gun show for $250, and I thought I did good. If it works right, that is a very fair price for a fine piece of history that you can shoot and enjoy. Stick to factory .38spl., no +P stuff and you'll be fine.

Very good deal, though I'd suggest doing a check of timing and lockup before shooting. Some have been badly abused in their long histories and have worked loose. But you cannot tell from appearances. I've seen ratty old Colts with perfect timing and lockup.

If the timing and lockup are good, and if the bore and chambers aren't rusted, $100 is a great price for this gun.

Here's one for sale on www.Gunsamerica.com

Colt Double Action Revolvers- Pre-1945
This used Colt Police Positive revolver fires the .38spl round. It has a 4" barrel with an overall blued finish. This 8 shot revolver shows wear on the barrel end and some wear o... (read more)

The advertised gun has more finish than your gun, but not enough to make it worth three and a half times as much!

In passing, this is a good gun for CCW -- the Colt Detective Special, which is the classic snubbie, is merely the Police Positive with a 2" barrel.

if it locks up tight...that is a $300 gun.

The gun is worth 235-260 and the grips are probably worth 100.

To check the lock up on a colt revolver, after checking it, of course...pull the hammer back, cocking the gun and then let the hammer down while CONTINUING to hold the trigger back. There should be ZERO rotational movement.
