Colt Official Police

Wow. Just WOW!

It's been a long time since I saw a Colt Official Police revolver in the new gun case, and a longer time since I have handled one.

Actually, I did own a Colt Officer's Model Match for a while. I fired it single action, one handed, and I was not as proficient with it as I should have been. I was actually better with my .45 SAA 5 1/2 inch revolver.

Frankly, I do not remember why, but back in the day I decided that I preferred the Smith and Wesson Combat Masterpiece. But none were available.

This may by sacrilege, but I was never a Python man. There were two things I dod not like about it: the vented rib, and the full length underlug.

But the new one is a great revolver, and it is rid of the service live and timing issues of old.

And now theire is a blue one. glory be!

Imagine the same thing without the rib and the underlug.

Imagine!

I have one and shoot it quite often.

Not sure if it is true or not but somehow I got the idea they are not the strongest things out there. I feed mine some pretty reduced loads, almost "cowboy" loads but not quite, a little more spicy then that.

It is just fun to shoot, it feels like you are holding quality in your hand. I pick it up, and look at it, it just says craftsmanship, hand fitted, I am a real machine. Then I pick up some plastic thing, and meh.

My last name is Fudd.

They were stong enought to withstand .357 magnum equivalent loads. The issue was the need for retiming, which was not related to the loads used.

The problem was common to all of the original Colt DA revolver sizes.

According to Bill Wilson of Wilson Combat the simple addition
of a trigger stop helps lessen the stress on the older Colts'
hands and avoids going out of time as easily during DA competitions.

If there's one thing that's likely to sway me from my planned course of purchases, it's a nice old(er) Smith & Wesson or Colt revolver. All of the nice looking Colts in this thread have me thinking my S&W Combat Masterpiece and Model 18 could use a 4" Official Police (or Police Positive Special) as a companion.

There's an Official Police currently sitting at a shop on consignment for $499. When I get some folding money, I'm gonna haggle and snag it.

what us folding money? bills?
You know, flash money.... or for those who aren't "with it."

[Ben Stein Voice] Funds that are primarily set aside for discretionary spending of non-essential items/services. Typically goods and/or services that are of a personal pleasure/indulgence/hobby. [/Ben Stein Voice]

I have only one, a late one, made in 1968 IIRC. It has the satin nickel finish, looks a lot like my satin nickel finish Combat Commander.

Well, I got me that folding money and should be getting it next time I'm in town. Told the shop to lut it aside for me. It was made in 1937.
That's great. You'll like that one. I had a 4", 1939 OP myself years ago, that was marked Treasury Department Secret Service on the backstrap. A uniform guards gun probably. I sold it to a collector in Georgia who collected department marked guns. To me it was just another gun, but it was something special to him.

I don't have an interest in agency marked guns for the most part. Getting a regular Colt OP is one of those things that in the past I kept pushing aside back in the day. Why? Because I was collecting Mausers, Arisakas, Enfields, Colt Snake Guns, S&W N-Frames, etc.... Back then, I always thought the following:

"Why go and buy a regular Colt OP right now? They'll always be dirt cheap since they're just run-of-the-mill .38 Specials. No one wants 'em."

Boy, was I wrong.

Man, if only I had back all the Official Police, Police Positives, Army Specials, and Model 19s and 10s I sold off back in the day, thinking " Oh, they're a dime a dozen, I'll just find another one someday....."

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger there. I was just over on the Colt Forum and did a search for my name. Even I was surprised by the number of old Colt's I've owned, and they are a minor to my addiction to Smith and Wesson's.

A Police Positive I didn't sell off.

And with a S&W DA Model 4 that I also didn't sell off.
