Numrich's has Police Positive Special barrels, but the shortest they have in stock is 4". Cost is listed at $41.

However, they also have a variety of Detective Special barrels in stock. Many are for the newer issue DS with the shrouded barrel. Not sure if those will fit the old frame. They may have the old style barrel, but I didn't look closely enough.

I would certainly like to see how this little project turns out. Get the thing reblued or even hard chromed and show it off. It'll make a great carry piece.

The following barrels will interchange, but will likely need to be gunsmith-fitted, and if the 'smith doesn't have the correct fixtures to support the frame and barrel, find someone else. Otherwise you could end up with a bent (sprung) frame.

Detective Special (old model/pencil barrel)
Detective Special (new model with underlug)

Cobra (old model/pencil barrel)
Cobra (new model with underlug)

Agent (old model/pencil barrel)
Agent (New model with underlug)

The pencil barrels are more recommended because you may not have to shorten the ejector rod. They are also easier to fit to the frame and have the classic look that would be more correct considering the age of the gun.

Changing the barrel must include the cost of the barrel, and the gunsmithing charges to install it. Do your math before making any move. :uhoh:

I ruthlessly soldered on a big thick 1/8" thick slab of steel, carefully shot and filed until I got elevation right, then opened up the rear sight notch to the right until it matched the new front sight and also shot to point of aim.
Next time, consider using half a penny...... They make a neat front sight.
