I was given a 2.5 inch Python, blue, in mint condition. It is in the original box with the test fire target, a packet with an adjustment key, NRA membership form, and instruction pamphlet. The box says 357 magnum, 38 Special, Colt Blue. The serial number is 28XXX. The gun looks unused, and was probably only fired a few times considering what I know of the original owner. Does anyone know when this gun was manufactured and what its approximate worth is? I have done some searching on the internet, but there doesn't seem to be many 2.5 inch pythons around.

dfariswheel will show up with the genuine official facts in due time, I'm sure. He's the one with the serious knowledge.

Colt didn't make an awful lot of 2.5-inch Pythons. They're slightly larger and heavier than Smith & Wesson K frame .357 magnums with short barrels, and were always more expensive. Mine's a dandy shooter, although impossible to hang onto with the factory stocks. I carry it sometimes.

I've never seen a snub Python that didn't show holster wear to one degree or another. If yours is that minty, I'd guess you could sell it for $900 in fairly short order, possibly as much as $1,200. If I were you, I'd put in a few weeks browsing the auction sites to develop a feel for these guns. Nota bene: beware the glowing descriptions, a good many of which are entirely fictional.

On second thought, if I were you, I'd do five things:

1. Keep it
2. Order a replacement rear sight from http://www.millettsights.com
3. Order some stocks from http://www.herrett-stocks.com
4. Order a holster from http://www.mitchrosen.com
5. Shoot it and carry it and shoot it some more

Here!!

Python number 28XXX.was made in 1963.

The numbers picked up that year at 24800, and went to 30799 by the end of the year.

A minty 2 1/2" Python from 1963 will bring a premium price over and above the usual price for a 2 1/2" gun.

Take care of the box and ALL contents. They add to the value.
That means if there's a plastic bag or a hang tag, keep them too.

Hhhhmmm, sounds nice.
I like the shorty Pythons. I would have to say Wolf's numbers sound pretty on target. It sounds like you got a wonderful gun for an even more wonderful price. Good luck with her.

Thanks

Thanks for the help. I quite enjoy it, but I am much more for shooting guns than just staring at them. Since this one looks like it was bought yesterday I'm just not sure that it is a perfect fit for me. I am mostly thinking about passing it on to a serious collector and turn the profit into a few guns that my son and I can enjoy shooting.

:D Nascar and guns make the world go round.

You didn't fill out your profile, so I'm not sure where you live. If you're in Arizona, maybe we can do some horse trading. Let me know.

Thanks, Jeff (GUNKWAZY)

I live in Kansas, so I'm quite a distance from Arizona. A trade would be kinda difficult.
