Heard on WDUQ FM News broadcasts , Public Radio run by Duquense University in Pittsburgh today, re the shooting at Virginia Tech yesterday, the following.

Media and political types in Europe, Great Britain and Australia, in the person of Australia's Prime Minister, a Mr. Howard have joined the fray, with comment on America's, as they see them, weak gun laws.

Interestingly, there was no mention of the fact that troops from the gun mad U.S. during the 20th century, twice saved Europe's ass, and that during WW2 American troops played a significant role in preventing a possible Japanese invasion of Australia, Australian troops being occupied elsewhere at the time.

Even more iteresting was the following from/about Japan, a country with all manner of restrictive, draconian gun and weapons laws. The current Mayor of Nagasaki was shot and killed today, while campaigning for re-election. Criminal involvement is reported/claimed. This is the second time a Mayor of Nagasaki has been shot.

Re the Virginia Tech shooting and domestic media reaction to it, the latest JPFO e-mail alert offers something on that. Readers might find it of interest. (jpfo.org)

Also heard today on WDUQ was Day to Day, a segment of which addressed the Virginia Tech shooting. They dug up The Texas Tower Shooting, as it came to be known, making references to Mr. Whitman's use of a "sniper rifle" therein. My comments, see below, on this Day to Day segment might interest some.

Listening to today's broadcast, I was not surprised to hear comment on the Virginia Tech shooting yesterday, a very sad circumstance.

I was not even all that surprised to hear what is known as The Texas Tower Shooting brought up, there is perhaps some relevancy between the two occurrences, but the relevancy might be described as a bit strained.

In any event, getting to the point, your "newsreader", I didn't catch the man's name was heard to breathlessly offer comment on The Texas Tower Shooter's (a Mr. Whitman) using a "sniper rifle". No definition of the genre was offered.

I personally have had many years of experience in competitive shooting (Center Fire Rifles, Shotguns and Handguns). Additionally I once upon a time, acting in my own defense, had occasion to draw a pistol. Happily it was not necessary for me to fire, as my "unwelcome guest", quit the premises rather rapidly. In any case, I have a pretty fair idea of what I'm talking about, respecting the types of small arms mentioned above.

Regarding your newsreaders reference to "a "sniper rifle", does he know the breach end of a rifle from the muzzle end of a rifle, sniper's or any other kind?. I ask this because many media types haven't the proverbial clue concerning small arms, not does it seem looking at their work product, do those who write the scripts from which broadcasters read.

In your travels, did any of you ever hear the following expression, usually heard after some outlandish statement or claim was offered, GIVE ME A BREAK !!!. If you listen with a modicum of care, you can hear it once again, politely as with Please, Give Me A Break.

Thanks for the above requested.
