Compact 1911 ???

oldFred it's too late, but why?
I suspect oldFred is referring to the Kimber Ultra carry.

There is much conjecture on the net as to the reliability of the 3" 1911s. Yours is a 3.5" (same as a Colt Officer) so I don't know that the concerns of the 3" guns apply.

I'd say the sweet spot for 1911s is the CCO (Officer frame, Commander slide, so 4" barrel).

Barrel length isn't as much of an issue as grip length when it comes to concealed carry, so the longer slide with shorter grip make the best of the compromise.

Still, for the money those little RIA 1911s are a decent deal, and should make for a nice CCW piece (just make sure you test it out thoroughly with whatever ammo you're going to carry with).

Now I've got some crazy ideas and I think the ultimate CCW 1911 would be a Para Ordnance P10-40 frame (which I believe is Detonics length grip) with a full size slide ... in 10mm

The compact 1911s I've seen do have their problems. If you can find one that works, great, but I'd want to shoot it first. There's nothing like buying an expensive gun, going to the range and having the thing not work. Then you have to box it up, send it back and wait forever.

Many 9mm pistols work right out of the box and I prefer them with a good JHP (Remington 115gr). You can also get +Ps and I think the stopping power is better as well.

The 1911s were fine in their day (they normally made 'em a bit loose so they'd work), but once they're tightened up they many times need work -- too many times to be comfortable without the option of first trying them out. Zunfoldge's gun is the better way to go if you must have a .45ACP.

Just my opinion....

Well....mebbe ah'm jest lucky, because I spent the afternoon at the range w/it - 100 rounds, not a single issue.

Ah still ain't decided whether ta keep or sell it....

I really like my Colt New Agent. Great pistol: light, accurate, reliable.
