If you had the choice between a Weatherby Mark V Deluxe in 300 Winchester Magnum and a Winchester Model 70 in 300 Weatherby Magnum, which would you select for hard hunting (dirty, freezing, snowy conditions that can challenge a rifle's ability to function)?

I would bet either rifle is up to the challenge, the win mag will be a lot cheaper to shoot though.

I like stainless synthetic rifles in those conditions.
Interesting that you indicated each others cartridges in your choices.
This creates a non linear universe and should be avoided.

^^^hahahah. nice

Either rifle should do in ugly conditions. Do you prefer one cartridge over the other for any reason? Both will take any game you are likely to hunt here in the 48. The win mag will be cheaper to shoot. You must know now that everyone here geeks out on the details, and you are being just too limited. share.

Get the Weatherby Mark V Synthetic.

I did some hard hunting with mine for several years without a problem. It was also very accurate.

Consider that you will be able to find .300 Winchester in a lot more places than you will be able to find Weatherby loadings. Something to consider if you are out and need to resupply due to some reason or another.

Also Weatherby does not offer a Mark V Deluxe in .300 Win, but they do in the Mark V Sporter, and that is a good looking wood stocked rifle at a significant savings.

I would go with the Win. because I have never been much of a WBY. fan on any level.....actions, hump back rifles...venturi razz matazz....none of it. To each their own, though.

For this, you want CRF, accept nothng less. A PF rifle is pefectly fine in "normal" conditions, but the harsher the conditons, the more CRF shines.

I'd take the Winchester 10:1. But I'd go 300 WSM. It does 98% of what the 300 WM will do with a shorter barrel, a lighter more compact rifle, more accurcy, and with about 10% less recoil

300 wsm or 300 win

I have a browning A Bolt in 300 WSM and a Ruger in 300 win.I hunt with the browning. It's 100 percent dependable and is lighter and less recoil than the ruger. On game you can't tell any diffrence

I have many rifles to chose from. My mark 5 syn 300 wby with muzzle brake,is the one i use most.I live in kodiak, nasty weather, bears.Shoots 180 tsx 3/4 inch@ 100.

I prefer the original 30 Magnum. The newer ones have more power but no matter how fast you drive it it's still a .30 bullet. And just saying "300 H&H" is way cool.

I also have a Remington Model 30 at the smith's being rebuilt as a custom 300 H&H.

Check out the price difference on a Midway or Cabela website. I screwed up and bought a 257 Weatherby instead of a 25-06. Ammo is 2 to 3 times as high as the 06. The Weatherby's are great rounds but they do not deserve that much more money for 200 fps.

I posted originally based on the fact that Wby made the deluxe at one time in 300 win mag. Its 24 inch #2 contour barrel seemed a little handier than the 26 inch. At the same time, I have seen used Model 70s on the market that are chambered in 300 wby mag.

I like the shorter length of the 300 win mag, which allows a 30-06 length action. My concern with the mark v is two fold: holes in the side of the bolt that can allow dirt and moisture to blow in and an enclosed trigger. The Model 70, on the other hand, even in push feed, has no exposed vent holes to allow dirt and moisture to blow in during a hard storm and the old Model 70 trigger is renowned for its ability to handle the worst of conditions, because it is not enclosed.

I have a Mark V in a smaller caliber, which I have had in the Rockies on some hunts; and, the amount of dirt alone that blows into the action is incredible. Many times I looked at the crud on the bolt and wondered how much dirt blew into the holes on the side of the bolt and if the gun would fire when I finally had a shot. Although it never failed to shoot, I had that concern, all the same.

Thanks for your comments. Oh, and by the way, it would be wonderful to hunt big bulls in AZ.

easy choise for me as i prefer the model 70 to the weatherby and prefer the 300 wby to the 300 win. But that said either would make a great setup.

The PF Model 70 is by far more reliable than a Mk V action. A CRF action is even more reliable.
The trigger in the model 70 PF and CRF are almost identical.
I have a 70 PF in 300Wby and with hand loads and heavy 200 gr and above bullets it is a sub MOA rifle.

I agree with you about the trigger group in the MK V. The trigger design in the 70 makes it more reliable. My first choice would be the CRF Model 70 though.
