I posted originally based on the fact that Wby made the deluxe at one time in 300 win mag. Its 24 inch #2 contour barrel seemed a little handier than the 26 inch. At the same time, I have seen used Model 70s on the market that are chambered in 300 wby mag.
I like the shorter length of the 300 win mag, which allows a 30-06 length action. My concern with the mark v is two fold: holes in the side of the bolt that can allow dirt and moisture to blow in and an enclosed trigger. The Model 70, on the other hand, even in push feed, has no exposed vent holes to allow dirt and moisture to blow in during a hard storm and the old Model 70 trigger is renowned for its ability to handle the worst of conditions, because it is not enclosed.
I have a Mark V in a smaller caliber, which I have had in the Rockies on some hunts; and, the amount of dirt alone that blows into the action is incredible. Many times I looked at the crud on the bolt and wondered how much dirt blew into the holes on the side of the bolt and if the gun would fire when I finally had a shot. Although it never failed to shoot, I had that concern, all the same.
Thanks for your comments. Oh, and by the way, it would be wonderful to hunt big bulls in AZ.
