Well, I just picked up my Bushmaster Varmint upper from Compass Lake today. They are an absolutely awesome group of guys and gals down there, let me tell you. Anyway, here are some pictures of what they did to my upper, I also had Bunny put the marvelous Frank White two stage trigger into the lower when I dropped the upper off and it is amazing!
I talked with Paul (the guy who does the fluting/barrel work) when I dropped it off and let him know what I was looking for. This was a 24" 1.040" under the handguard, .920" from the gas block forward barrel, absolutely useless as anything other than a bench rifle. It is now a MUCH lighter 20" barrel with a CL muzzle brake and straight fluting, which is very deep under the forend. he also turned the barrel down a little bit from the gas block forward so that it would match perfectly with the brake, and it does, I cannot even tell it is a separate piece! It balances very well now and can be shot offhand without too much strain, though the scope did add a bit of weight forward. The pictures show the overall appearance of the rifle now, much more balanced than with the big honking 24" stainless, and a close up of the amazing fluting work done.
So basically, I cannot recommend Compass Lake strongly enough, they do fantastic work at very reasonable prices and the customer service is second to none!
