I am looking for some competitions for a newbie in Minnesota. I know about some IPSC,
Bullseye and for shotgun the various clay competitions, but wasn't looking so much for that.

I was thinking maybe something kind of practical where mostly unmodified pistols are used.

IDPA or pins maybe? I just want to get started on something where I can kind of learn as
I go and can just use my 1911's. My pistols are all fairly stock with only trigger jobs,
optics or race guns.

I just don't know where the competitions are I guess. I'm south of the river, but can
drive a decent distance. Any tips are appreciated.

I know they used to do bowling pins and silhouette at the Burnsville Pistol Range. You might want to go there shooting and ask the owner.

Maybe check out the associations online and look for Minnesota matches. That's how I found out about Highpower Rifle matches. Now I just need more time to go to more of them.

Good luck!

I shot USPSA (IPSC I guess) at Armored Fire last winter and am trying to make it on Thursdays to Oakdale.

You really can shoot USPSA with your 1911's without being outclassed. I shoot production with a G17 (3.5lb connector) otherwise unmodified. Most people there who shoot limited 10 just shoot a 1911. A few have racy holsters and mag carriers, most don't. A trigger job and a magwell is pretty much the extent of the modifications to a limited 10 gun.

You really only compete against your type of gun. I don't really compete against 1911's in production.

The big race guns are in limited (high caps allowed, no optics) and open (high caps, optics ported barrels).

You can also analyze your scores weekly and watch your improvement relative to yourself. You can also tell you are getting better.

Unless you decide to sign up as an open class shooter with a limited gun the equipment is not much of a factor. The "IPSC equipment race" is in your mind. If you can move and shoot accurately and quickly you will do well, if you can't you won't. Don't blame the gun.

Oakdale is a great time, you really should go at least 2-3 times an try it out. The people there are nice and helpful to beginners, and it doesn't have a real competitive "feel" to it. Just people having fun. Armored Fire was having bowling pin shoots on Thursdays too, but it is a pretty long drive for you. Email or post I will answer any questions you have.

If you look around Minnesota at many of the different ranges, clubs, and gunshops, you will find many different things going on. There is sporting clays, trap, skeet, 5 station clays, etc. There is DCM/CMP rifle shooting, NRA silhouette, as well as a few other events for the rifle shooters. For the pistols you will find Bullseye, PPC, IDPA, USPSA, as well as a few others.
DPMS hosts a 3-gun match in August.

At our range you mainly find only training courses, as well as we hold a monthly Alumni Training Day. The Alumni Training sessions are reality skilled based. A few that we have done are handgun defense from vehicles and around vehicles, and one handed fundamentals and defenses while protecting your loved ones. We added the Alumni sessions to allow people to come once a month to the range and have some quality range time, as well as practice and learn some skills. Most find these sessions to be packed with knowledge, as well as great fun.

We have added a 3-gun day in August which will be handgun, shotgun and carbine. October we will do a 5-gun day which will be revolver, semi auto handgun, shotgun, carbine, and precision rifle. Our 3-gun and 5-gun days are based on reality and only stock guns and equipment may be used, no race guns or bad use of tactics is allowed (to include misses). For ideas of what our range sessions are about, check with the Minnesota Hometown forums at www.ar15.com and ask around.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet. IPSC has a lot of production shooters. There is not a "equipment race" if you don't want to compete in race gun divisions. Just shoot production like the rest of us cheap bastards.

I shoot every week at the IPSC league in Oakdale. There is typically 8-12 of us shooting production. We are using completely stock pistols with only 10 rounds in our mags. I am planning on shooting Production for the next couple of years. I like to shoot what I carry and by shooting production I can get a lot of good practice in. I have only been shooting IPSC now for three months and I just got my first Division win last week!!! I love shooting IPSC!! I tell my non shooting friends that it is the most fun you can have with your clothes on.

Come out to Oakdale on a Thur night it only cost $12 and is really a good time. If you come out look for a guy shooting a Springfield XD, thats me.

We have about ten guys that come down from the cities to our local IDPA shoot in Holmen Wisconsin. It's an easy drive and a great place to shoot.

Well worth the drive.
We had Matt Burkett here last weekend.
We also have pins, plate shooting and cowboy action.
Check out the pictures. We don't stop shooting when the snow flies.
Drive down to Winona, cross the Mississippi, and you're almost there.
