I see a lot of people using Glocks for IDPA and super tricked out race guns for IPSC. Where does my stock Kimber Custom 1911 fit in the competition world of things?

It is not all Glocks and raceguns.

You can shoot IDPA in the Custom Defensive Pistol divison, which requires .45 ACP and only allows 8 in the magazine. Some say that is because Bill Wilson sells 1911s.

And, you can shoot USPSA/IPSC in the Single Stack division, pretty much the same setup. Or you can get some 10 round extension magazines and enter in Limited-10 and be as competitive as your skill allows.

+1 on the USPSA single stack division or IDPA CDP. You'll get really good at reloads if you shoot single stack.:D

Team Single Stack!

Laying the smack down on Limited / Open shooters at a range near you.

Just follow the trail of empty magazines, and that's where we'll be. :)

How very true!! I love shooting SSP and watching the old farts who have spent countless thousands on their 38 Super Space guns fussing with their optical sights, FTF, FTE, etc on the line and on the clock.

SSP guys are slow, have to reload multiple times on the COF, but our guns go bang very loudly and make really big holes every time we pull the trigger. Hell, getting hit by ejected 45 brass might even be fatal! "Stand back, it's an SSP guy shooting!"

Like Jack says, it very hard to beat the fun of shooting bowling pins. No running about the range either. Pin shooting is fun and far more civilised.
In any case, work up a load(shooting cast bullets is far less expensive than jacketed) and go have fun shooting what you have. Competitive shooting is enormous fun and you'll meet some great people. Don't worry about 'placing' or looking bad. It doesn't matter. Go shoot because it's fun.
Don't think I'd hesitate shooting bullseye with your pistol either.
