Just got this in the mail today. Apparently I have a secret admirer out there somewhere named "Gene T. Rosentreter", or at least thats what I think the hand-written signature says.

In a personalized NRA card that thanks me for my selfless service to my country was an NRA membership card, good until this time next year. Along with that was something I'm a little sketchy on. In order to activate my membership I need to sign something. Plastered all over this form is something about $6,000 in benefits. Is NRA trying to sell me some kind of life insurance? It claims that if I'm killed in a hunting accident, domestic shooting, or car crash going to or from an NRA event my loved ones will receive $6K.

I want my active NRA membership, but I don't want to sign something that obligates me to pay for some kind of shooting-death insurance. Anyone help me out here?

Your NRA membership includes a $5,000 AD&D policy and a $1000 firearms insurance. That's the $6,000 of insurance they are talking about. One can purchase additional coverage for more money, but the other is included.

I believe you activate the insurance seperately from the NRA membership. You may want to read more of the fine print.

My renters insurance covers my guns and my $450,000 life insurance policy has all others covered :)

I just want the membership, not this bogus insurance.

Again, it's not bogus insurance and it won't cost you anything unless you sign up for additional coverage. And again, you don't need to activate the insurance to be an NRA member. Again, you may wish to read the fine print.

But, if it'll make you feel like you are sticking it to the man, you go ahead and shred that insurance form.

It sounds like your NRA membership is already active, although, if you didn't pay for it, I'm not sure how exactly you're helping out the NRA. But, whatever floats your boat.

In that case, I advise letting the NRA know by email or telephone that you do not wish to receive marketing material or solicitations. Give them your membership number and they'll mark that down and never bug you again except to renew when the time comes (I'm a life member, so I don't need to renew:evil: ).

I was getting a bunch of junk from the NRA, from silly surveys that then asked you to send in money, to insurance ads, etc. They say none of it came from membership dues (probably other companies paying them to send stuff to NRA members), but I didn't want to waste their time or my time in getting a bunch of mail I wasn't interested in. One quick email later, and I haven't gotten anything from them except for American Rifleman.
