If you want long term rust prevention, it looks like WD-40 Specialist Long Term Corrosion Prohibitor is the answer.

Easy to find, I've seen it at Lowes.

I recall another test done very much the same way where Hornady One Shot came out the winner. I am going to have to look for that test.

Thanks for posting this.

Bought some based on this test, and I can say it works really well for stuff in very humid areas. Like wake up and you are covered in water humid.

They lost me at Ballistol having a strong smell. One reason I use it a lot is I live with "girls." Very sensitive to the gunny stuff smells, do not mind it at all, or even apparently notice. He even ends with a warning to not use any of these except with good ventilation because your health, but... didn't look up the MSDS. Several of them are not poisonous at all. Instead of a subjective smell test, actual chemical danger would have been easy enough to check on with all the other effort he put into it.

I also have to ask: Who is protecting bare mild steel with only oil? I finish things in permanent coatings instead. What sort of stuff needs a temporary coating like these for rust proofing alone? Not sure I am thinking along the same lines as any of these applications.
