My wife has heard that if you have a concealed carry license and ever shoot someone you may end up in jail and lose everything you own even if you do everything right. There is insurance available that will cover liability and legal costs in these situations. Any thoughts are experience with this type of insurance. What my wife fails to understand is that the only way I am ever going to shoot anyone is if I am convinced that I, or someone dear to me, will be killed or seriously harmed if I do not shoot them. I would rather be broke and in jail than dead.

More accurately, if you ever kill or seriously harm anyone, you will have to present evidence to the effect that your action was either accidental or lawfully justified. That could lead to a trial, which could prove very expensive indeed; there are also risks concerning civil suits. You may end up in jail, either pending the outcome of a trial, or if your action is deemed to have been criminal in nature, upon conviction.

Generally, justification would depend upon whether your action had been immediately necessary to defend yourself or a third person from an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm.

That is true whether you shoot someone or injure the person with a bat, tire iron, nine iron, carving knife, screwdriver, or Cross pen. It is true whether you have a concealed carry license or not.

You cannot generally insure against an intentional act.

There are arrangements, such as joining the Armed Citizen's Legal Defense Fund, that can help you with legal expenses, however.
