Best I can tell, every state-required CCL or CHCP class covers only basic handgun safety (some with live-fire at a range, others no live fire) and state laws regarding open and concealed carry, but have no content on how to handle actual self-defense "manual of arms" when carrying concealed. That is, the mandated license or permit classes have no instruction with practice on how to draw and fire from concealment.
We know that there are both national (e.g. MAG, Rangemaster, etc.) and local or regional schools that do offer actually CCW training, and NRA now has a CCW class, although it appears many NRA Pistol instructors do not offer that class.
Has anyone taken the NRA CCW class that you can compare it with more well-established CCW SD classes you have also taken?
Feel free to comment on any CCW SD classes and schools, too.

I see this rapidly devolving into the "level of training mandated" quagmire. (giggitygiggitygigitty-all right!) It then becomes who is in control of the training, and what is the philosiphy driving it?

Way back in 1994 ish, I got an OR permit. You could take a talky class or the NRA intro pistol class which also would qualify. That class did run over basic gun handling, SD issues and we were taught how to handle SW 2nd gen 9mm semis.

If that old class is the current one, I don't know. I once took the instructor class having delusions of being in the training business. That faded.

Friends took the talky class and it was just the law and don't be a commando. One guy said the instructor let loose a 45 ACP over the heads of the class. OMG!!!

Having to draw from concealment with newbies in the short time available in class would be a ND horror show.

SC is fairly strict about their training requirement in order to get your permit.

I disagree with it wholeheartedly although I understand its premise and its good intention. As someone who taught the basic CCW class for years ... I've seen plenty of reasons why it is sometimes disconcerting to simply hand someone a weapon and a permit and tell them they're fine to now carry.

I disagree with it mainly because they let it come into play to vigorously and rigorously with regard to their reciprocity agreements ... and then things get petty with other friendly border states and beyond.

At the same time it is a Right ... not a gov bestowed gift.

It is a responsibility and you cannot legislate good responsibility upon the citizenry .... or can we? Should we? Shall we?

We require a driver's license to drive a vehicle correct? A builder's license to build a skyscraper. A pilot's license to fly a plane.

I'm good with the whole minimum training requirement to carry a firearm. Beyond that it is up to the permit holder to do the right and responsible thing and train, practice, train, practice, train, practice then put it all into practical application and do it some more.

Taking some in-person training classes from well-qualified instructors is highly recommendable imho. Everyone should do it at least once or twice a year.

Great topic OP! :)
