I was curios if it is legal to concealed carry in: State Parks, National Forests, and/or National Parks. I am pretty sure from my research that it is legal in State Parks and National Forests, but it seems like everyone says that National Parks are a whole other animal.

From a VA permit holder's view point, you can carry in state parks and national forests. As for national parks, No. Hopefeully this will change soon as the dept of interior is revisitng this restirction.

I received a letter from Gun Owners of America yesterday stating that the new regulations have been approved by the NPS and that beginning within a few weeks gun owners will be able to carry firearms in National Parks according to the laws of the state in which the NP is located.
So ,if your state allows carry in State Parks such as Florida and Texas and you have a carry permit you are good to go in the National Park.
Now GOA is asking all of us to send a letter to our Congressmen/women to support H.R. 5646 to make this change permanent.
Otherwise the next administration can simply revert back to the no carry rule and we are back to square one.

Thank you for the information. I forgot to mention I live in the state of West Virginia, but I live so close to the border of Virginia that I am in Virginia almost everyday (So I have a West Virginia concealed handgun permit).

You'll be in good shape. Both Virginia and West Virginia allow carry in State Parks and National Forests so as soon as this is finalized(Maybe July 1)you can carry in National Parks in both states.
But we must work to make this change permanent.
Forgot to mention GOA is pushing to allow OC under the new regs.

Right! Just for the sake of emphasis.....You CANNOT open carry in a National Forest. OC is currently illegal in a National Forest even if you live in an OC state like VA. They will jam you!

Ironic because here in CA national forests are practicly the most gun friendly wilderness we have.
State parks and similar places are severely anti-gun, guns are a major no no. In a National Forest you can at least have a firearm loaded at your campsite, and some even have ranges. They also have hunting.

Your worst is one of our best.

Appearantly this was a THR member from West Virginia killed while in a state park by a couple criminals. His firearms were the likely target of the killers.

This is specific to Virginia (I grew up in Virginia and so shooting in George Washington National Forest when visiting my parents). It is a policy of one of the state departments (I think the Department of Conservation and Recreation), and West Virginia has no such rule. From what I have heard the Forest Service doesn't care if you OC, but take that for what it is worth.

Last I heard, this was one of the rules VCDL was trying to get changed so we can OC anywhere we can CC in Virginia.

So just to sum up everything and make sure I understood everyone well. Also I would like to thank everyone once again for filling me in on this information!

Think you’re wrong on the OC in State Parks (CC only with CHP).
Check http://www.vcdl.org/static/ccw.html

Copy and pasted from the page at the link above:
Federal Property (concealed carry with CHP and hunting exempted in National Forests) (18USC § 930)
State Parks (concealed carry w/CHP legal but open carry prohibited)

And since currently National Forest laws mirror the state laws in which they’re located, VA says CC only in State Parks (with CHP), OC prohibited, so I assume the same is true for VA National Forests?

I was under the impression the comment period was closing today. I don't see anything on GOA's site and arfcom has nothing about this. Arfcom is usually on stuff like this like white on rice. ??????

ETA: Arfcom = AR15.com

XD fan,
Here is the letter I received Saturday,June 28 from GOA.
My letter was not dated. This notice from their website dated May 6,2008 IS IDENTICAL to the letter I received 2 days ago.
Take it for what it's worth.
You see it is on the GOA site. You must have missed it.

Carrying Guns Soon To Be Legal In National Parks
-- But your help is needed to make sure the right is permanently recognized

The Bush administration, after more than seven years, has finally issued regulations permitting the carrying of firearms in national parks. Gun owners will soon be able to carry firearms according to the laws of the state in which the park is located.

While not perfect, the proposed regulations, which are likely to take effect at the end of June 2008, represent a sharp contrast with the steadfast refusal to allow for self-defense in national parks.

The bureaucrats responded after a crescendo of congressional activity. Senator Tom Coburn has made efforts to put the matter before the Senate, and would have done so had Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid not broken his word to Coburn to allow him to have a vote on the measure. Also, 47 Senators signed a letter to the Department of the Interior urging that the ban be removed.

In the House, there are now three bills that would open national parks to carrying firearms as regulated by the state in which the park is located.

The most recent bill, and the most comprehensive, is that of GOA Life Member Paul Broun (R-GA), who was elected to Congress in July of last year. Rep. Broun has introduced HR 5646, the "Protecting the Second Amendment and Hunting Rights on Federal Lands Act of 2008."

This is not the time to slack off on our efforts. If congressional activity got the Park Service bureaucrats to finally move, we need to keep the heat on. We need to make sure they follow through.

Moreover, legislation is the more sure way of keeping concealed carry "on the books." Regulations could be changed the first day an anti-gun president takes office.

Finally, Rep. Broun's legislation would go even further than the proposed National Parks regulations. As we mentioned above, they are not perfect. Among other things, it’s not clear (in the proposed regs) whether or not an individual will be able to engage in open carry on national park lands for the purpose of self-defense. That would not even be questioned under the Broun bill.

So with all this in mind, we urge you to send an email to your representative urging him to cosponsor Rep. Broun's bill, HR 5646.

ACTION: Please urge your Representative to cosponsor HR 5646. You can visit the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center to send your Representative the pre-written e-mail message below. And, you can call your Representative at 202-225-3121or toll-free at 1-877-762-8762.

----- Pre-written letter -----
Dear Representative:

I urge you to cosponsor Rep. Paul Broun's bill, H.R. 5646, which protects the Second Amendment rights of individuals to carry firearms and ammunition in units of the National Park System and the National Wildlife Refuge System. It also requires that hunting activities be a land use in all management plans for Federal land to the extent that such use is not clearly incompatible with the purposes for which the Federal land is managed.

Now that the Park Service has finally recognized that this is a good idea, there is no reason not to enact this into federal law so that the next president could not once again make it illegal to protect oneself with a gun in a national park.

Please let me know when you have cosponsored Rep. Broun's bill. Gun Owners of America will be keeping me posted.

Sincerely,

Alright, thanks for clearing that one up for me basicblur.

No problem…after all, as anyone in here will tell ya I’m nothing if not helpful! :D

If you’re not familiar with VCDL, bookmark ‘em (and sign up for their free e-mails)-they’re one of the best (and most active) gun rights organizations around. Since you say you spend a lot of time in VA, their resources will be a great help.

Not familiar with ‘em yet, but some folks in West VA have set up a similar organization, and they got a lot of help from/modeled themselves on VCDL, so hopefully they’ll be just as active and efficient.
