Concealed Carry Permit Hassles (or not?) based on State

Oh, very importantly -- a Concealed Carry permit IS required in Pennsylvania if you transport a weapon anywhere in a vehicle

So if you purchase a handgun and you don't have a permit, you are in violation of the law when you take it home?

Don't believe everything you hear friend.

Let's see, in Arizona, first you need to buy a gun, a holster and some ammunition. And a good belt. And then you are good to go. Concealed or open. In the car, not in the car. Constitutional carry is great!

Should you feel the need for a permit, that is pretty easy as well.
Technically the same here in Arkansas, though many jurisdictions will hassle or even arrest for open carry.

The licensing process is mostly hassle free, unless you count the, IMO, excessive cost and sometimes lengthy waits.

I am pretty sure the handgun has to be unloaded and not accessible, like in the trunk or a locked box to transport without a permit. I mean how did people in PA transport their weapons from the store or from hunting before PA went shall issue?

AL until recently had a similar law requiring a CCW (or Pistol Permit as it is called here) to transport a handgun in your car. There were a couple of exceptions in the law (including taking it home after purchase) but taking it to the range or hunting were not legal exceptions. This was all changed last year when the state revised our gun laws.

Yes, we had three new people in the class. Only difference was they had to get their picture and prints.

You get a 'free" renewal, I think, on the 3rd or 4th renewal.
I had taken my paperwork only renewal the last time, so I had to do the class and shooting this time and it's good to 2019.
Plus if your Military and provide a copy of your LES and ID card, there is no charge to get your CHL.

That's pretty much my point Midwest.
Sometimes intent doesn't translate well just reading a typed message. :)

Every time I go to renew the clerk's office has moved and I have to find it again. The place for fingerprint's moved once, also. Then it takes well over two months before I'm notified that my license is ready. I apply early.

This time they tell me that I can't apply until six months before my license expires and that approval doesn't take as long. No fingerprints, either, because they are on file now and the clerk's office will take the photo. It's getting easier...sort of. (Michigan)

I had let my Texas CHL lapse, so I had to do a new application last year. The system would not accept my application on-line, so I had to submit the paper forms.

It took 95 days from the date that DPS received my paperwork before I got my card in the mail. I understand that the average time for new on-line applications is around 45 days.

CHL is good for 5 years. Class time is 4-6 hrs., very simple 50 round shooting qualification, and fingerprints are submitted electronically. Texas now uses your DL photo, so no need for a new photo. Cost for prints is $9.95. There are varying costs for CHL. (senior citizen, indigent, veteran, etc.) Normal, first time application is $140.

All CHL renewals are now online. There is no classroom time or shooting qualification required. Just take a simple test and pay the fee by CC and you are done.

I renewed my Concealed Carry Permit in Pennsylvania today and I am happy to report that there were no real hassles at all. I changed county residency in the last 5 yrs, so it was considered a new application and not a renewal. $20, one photo ID, a completed form, and 19 minutes of my time, including going to the wrong court building initially and I have my permit slated to be mailed and arrive in 2 to 6 weeks. So, no hassles at all, and I think it is cheaper now than it was 5 yrs ago (something like $31 or $39 then).
When I got my PA permit done, they made it up right there and I walked out of the courthouse with it.

I don't know about out of state individuals in Pennsylvania, but I was told today that, at the very least, transportation of a firearm by a Pennsylvanian within Pennsylvania requires a Concealed Carry Permit. At least if you have ammunition with you in the vehicle. I am not sure about a firearm being transported without ammunition.

Don't forget that PA has reciprocity with several states, so depending on where you reside, your permit could cover you in PA.

I posted a link to and several quotes from the statutes earlier in the thread.

You may only transport a loaded handgun if you have an LTCF.

You can transport an unloaded handgun "in a secure wrapper", but only if you are going to or from the range, the gun store, a gunsmith, to a class, if you're moving or going to a vacation home, or some other rare occurrences.

You can't stick the unloaded gun in your car and go anywhere else. If you want to stop for breakfast on the way to the range, too bad. (This is actually why I got my LTCF before even buying a gun—I'm not actually going to carry until I've gotten some training, but not having to worry about stuff like that is easily worth $20 and a few minutes of paperwork.)

Florida is pretty straight forward.

Initial registration is $112 for 7 years (application fee, background check and fingerprinting, 4 hour class (or DD-214)

Renewal is $65 (re-fingerprinting is not required)

The Department of Agriculture / Division of Licensing issues the permit.

Got my renewal in 2010 and was signed by the Commissioner, Charles Bronson.

;)

Ummm, then how does one legally get a gun home after purchase w/o a CC permit? Me thinks you might not have this quite right.

Getting the Handgun Carry Permit is a bit of a hassle in TN, in time as well as money. The required class runs a minimum of $50 to as much as $100, the permit fee is $115, and you have to go to the DMV to get it, as well as having to be fingerprinted. After that, there is a wait of several weeks. Mine took just short of five.

Same in Wyoming. I just applied for a permit a few weeks ago so that I would be in compliance in other states. $74 for permit, prints and whatever. Nothing but a photo ID and fingers to print required.

Well - at least they aren't infringing upon your 2nd Amendment rights... I wonder what would happen if they had the same requirements to vote or go to church? Too bad the 2nd amendment isn't equal with any other right in the Bill of Rights.

Well, I grabbed my pistol, cocked and locked it, stuck it in a holster and tossed it on the passenger seat under my jacket. Depending on what part of town I am in while not driving or how close I get to the border while driving will determine if I attach gun-filled-holster to my pants via my belt or leave it hidden in my car.
In Arizona, that was all the trouble I had in dealing with concealed weapons decisions today.

NC - class costs a bit, then fingerprints at the sheriffs office. Then the sheriff has the application for a month or two before deciding yes or no. some say its a process with roots in racism.... jim crow laws.

Florida was easier because of the military clause that exempted the class.

Rapides Parish, Louisiana:
Presented annual renewal application to RPSO receptionist. Called me back 4 days later, to pick it up, with $10 charge for the card, now, (was totally free for renewal - $50 first time charge.)
CHL is a parish-only issue. Have attended NRA class with pursuant letter, have DD214, and hand-written letter attesting to military usage of firearms in SouthEast Asia.

PA. Is a very good state to be a gun guy- Philly. But then again time will tell. PA. has more NRA members then any other state could be that's why. Look at the states the border PA. May not Ohio or WV. But as I said time will tell.

I took my wife to get her first ccw... she filled out a 3x5 card, waited 11 minutes, paid $10 and had her permit in hand. It would have been sooner but there was one fellow in line ahead of her.

Must be nice. Filed for mine over 60 days ago in Illinois and don't have a permit yet. And ... I'm an authorized instructor.

Last time I renewed mine was at the downtown Seattle courthouse. I dreaded going down there as I avoid the downtown area because of traffic & parking. I usually go to a small sheriffs office in the county for my renewals, but they closed it down because of budget cuts. - I had nothing to dread. Plenty of parking garages in the area and they renewed it and printed it up immediately. (When I went to the county sheriffs office in the past I had to wait till they mailed it to me.) It was actually a sunny day in Seattle so I also grabbed some lunch afterwards & enjoyed my time downtown. Overall, an unexpectedly pleasant experience.
