I am so old that I remember Bogart retrieving a handgun concealed under his dash, it was on a hinged plate whiched he released and carried two pistols.
I would like to have a simular set up or maybe a drawer mounted int the dash.
Any known options or must I hammer a hole in my dash, and hang beaded curtains over it?
thanks
robert

Modern vehicles offer too many decent options for stashing a concealed handgun. There's not much need to "customize" the interior.

I do wish manufactures would put a nice, secure pocket on the front of the driver's seat.

I would look to custom fabricators. Rig up a dummy radio plate that is actually a drawer or something. Its going to have to be custom built I am sure.

I am speaking strictly off the top of my head and based upon my 55 year old memory, but I recall reading that it is illegal (in CA) to construct a hidden compartment for a gun in a vehicle.

YMMV

My trucks got a floor, a bench seat, or a dash, to set a pistol on, behind the seat would restrict access. so was thinking "in the dash",or under!
Flintlock Tom,I trust it would be only considered concealed here, and hopefully instant access and no need to bounce it about all day would prove a benifit(less handling)

reason #18237419 why i won't ever live there.

back on topic, i too would be interested in creating a secret compartment for a handgun in my vehicle. my wife and i have been talking about this a lot lately. i'm considering creating a false bottom in the center console of my F350, but it isn't really as quick-access as i'd like. the idea of a hidden pocket at the front of the driver's seat is a good one. if you ever build one, you can count me as a customer.

i have designs for my trunk that has a motorized fingerprint safe that replaces the floor of the trunk and will fit ammo, a carbine, a shotgun, and pistols... or whatever else you want...

but its very expensive to get custom fabrication done when it comes to steel etc...

But isn't it illegal to have a gun in your car without a permit in any event? What is the purpose of a redundant law? If they find the compartment and no gun is there, how the hell are they going to prove you built it to hide a gun? If they do find a gun there, why do they need to charge you with anything else since they have you cold on carrying a gun?????????????????

:barf:

mbt2001, you do not need a permit to carry a gun in your vehicle in Florida as long as its securely encased, not readily accessible..

Check your local laws. Many states have laws about hidden compartments in vehicles. Another unintended consequence of the war on drugs.

You might look into a gun vault that fits under the driver's seat or if legal where you are, I've seen a kydex holster attached to the bottom of the steering column with a flex cuff.

You do not need a permit to have a gun in the car in CA. However, the gun must be unloaded and kept in a locked case (glove box doesn't count), and ammo must be in a sepperate locked case.

I have a gun safe mounted in each of my vehicles, in 2 of them it is mounted under the front seat, in the third it is mounted in front of the seat.
Hardest part is finding a small gun safe that either has a pull-out drawer or a front opening panel, not to many out there right now. The one in my 06 chevy p/u was a real pita, I finally wound up making a spline nut socket on my milling maching so I could jack the front seat up an inch so the safe would fit underneath it.
I know it isn't as romantic as a hidden compartment, but it does reliably work and it keeps my gun (and other stuff) out of casual sight.
Actually the last hidden compartment I built was in my old 85 mazda p/u. I mounted an electrical box behind the optional clock panel. The panel easily popped off if you pulled it correctly and I had enough room for a pile of dope.
One day I rolled the truck, nobody ever did find my stash, I recovered it later.
AHHhh sweet doper memories, the only legal thing I still retain from those long-gone dumbass days

http://www.copsplus.com/prodnum1481.php is a vehicle mount made by fobus, has a roto thing on it, so you can mount it in weird angles, but need to ck your state's laws on this type of thing... this is not any sort of lock, just a quick access holster, so gun would be vulnerable if left in there while away from vehicle and again may not be legal in many states

http://www.titangunvault.com/ this thing has a few uses to mount in house or vehicle, not as quick access but adds locking functionality, either just keep loaded gun in the provided holster, or have the option to add an ammo pouch to include primary or secondary magazine, could be mounted under a seat or some dashes to obscure from view...

there's also a variety of console vaults for various vehicles if you look hard enough, I bought a really cool simplex lock console vault that bolted into my SUV w/ room enough for guns and ammo, but they no longer make it, or I'd post a link, but there are others...

The locked case only applies to concealed handguns. It is legal to have an unloaded handgun on the seat next to you as long as it is visible and you do not pass within 1,000 feet of a school, which is almost impossible in any urban or suburban area.

Also, ammunition does not have to be in a separate locked case. It can either be in the same case with the firearm or separate and unlocked.
