I will be driving from Michigan to Texas in early January. All the states I will be passing through honor my Michigan permit. I was taught in my class to query the Attorney General's offices for any up-to-date changes in their carry laws before passing through a different state. In your opinions, is there anything else I should be checking on? Heck, I'm so new to carrying in my own state that I haven't even done the Wally World Tactical Map yet! But, it IS on the list (waiting for that ubgholster to come in the mail.)

Appreciate your help.

Michael

It wouldn't hurt to check each state's AG to verify that they still recognize your permit.

Beyond that, you need to learn the laws on each of the states. Your out-of-state permit (if recognized) gives you the right to carry in other states according to the other states' laws. So if, for example, your state allows you to carry in restaurants that serve booze but you stop for dinner in a state that does NOT allow carry in any establishment selling alcohol for on-site consumption -- well, in that state you'd better know to leave Roscoe in the car while you eat.

That's just an example. The point is, your Michigan permit doesn't bring Michigan laws with it to every state you'll travel through. You will be subject to the prevailing laws of each state.

I drive from Indiana to Texas every year to visit my mother. All the states you will pass through EXCEPT for Illinois, have "peaceable journey" laws, that allow the firearm in the vehicle while traveling through a given state. If you go through IL on I-55/57, the handgun must be broken down and cased, not accessible to the driver. If you're going to take I-65 south, you're good to go. Double check the laws. It's not hard to do online. I last went to TX in June of this year, and things may have changed. None of the officers between here and there will be impressed by "I didn't know that".

Thanks for the help. I will be taking I-65 and am not going through Illinois. Seems easy to check the laws in other states, but surprisingly, a bit difficult to find statutes on "peaceable journey" laws. I dont foresee any problems and doing my best to check this out. I appreciate your responses.
