Ok here's a little question. How do ya'll conceal a Ruger p89

Don't tell me it can't be done, I know it can and I know that some of you all do it.

So what I am interested is what holsters you use, and where on your body do you conceal it. Strong side behind the hip, in front, in the small of the back, thunderware:D ?

I figure if Wisconsin ever gets CCW (unlikley) or I have to move to TX (more likley) I might want to carry that little brick I love so much. Some day in the future I'll probably get a polymer frame .45 or a little snubby .357, but until then... its concealing bricks.

My way is baggy Hawaiian style shirt and Milt Sparks Summer Special. OR, I have several light weight vests I can wear loose over an untucked T to hide the bulge if weather allows. Frankly, though, I don't carry either of my Rugers in summer, perfer to pocket my Kel Tec. But, if I'm going to a big city I CAN carry the P85 or preferably the P90. And, with a P11 in my pocket for back up, I'm pretty well armed with a .45 caliber P90 IWB. Sorta weighs the pants down, but heck, I like having that P11 in a pocket when I'm in a dark parking area or something, walk with my hand in my pocket. It's also quick to get at that way as opposed to on an ankle.

The P89 ain't THAT big.

I don't have experience with that particular model, but over the years I've figured a few things out about CCW that are pretty much universal.

  • Get a high quality, molded (leather or Kydex) holster ... you're not concealing anything larger than a PPK with an Uncle Mike's Nylon IWB rig.
  • IWB conceals better than OWB and with a quality holster its not really any less comfortable (I recommend a dual loop/dual clip type holster like a Milt Sparks VMII or HBE DC Special).
  • Get a good belt. Strong, maybe even reinforced leather. One that doesn't bend easily.
  • Mindset. 99% of people wouldn't notice if you walked down the street with an HK MK23 SOCOM in a tactical thigh holster, so don't assume everyone can see your hidden gun. If you believe its hidden, it likely is.
  • Don't touch it. Stop fiddling with it. Stop "adjusting" it. Pretend it isn't there. When a carrier is made I'd bet 99 times out of 100 its because someone saw them messing with their rig.

As far as position, that's a real personal thing (based on your body shape, what you're comfortable with, etc). You'll probably have to experiment with it a bit.

I carry in a holster with an FBI Cant (about 15deg) in the 3 o'clock position (I used to carry at 4 but I found that my arm helps to conceal at 3 ... plus I can draw while sitting).

My hip bone gets in the way of 3 o'clock. I carry at 4 o'clock and can still conceal the bulge with my arm cause of the cant of the holster. Yes, it IS a very personal thing. If you have more gut than I, and I have some typical age 50ish gut, IWB might not work as well.

IMO the best way to conceal a big (or fat) gun is to keep it "tight" to the body. This can best be accomplished with a holster where the belt runs over and outside the holster, or better yet and inside the waistband holster. Effective but not very comfortable.

I have a p89 ,best way is a fanny pack worn in the front ,you can hide anything in one ,can also wear it under a shirt or jacket:D

I use an IWB nylon holster in front about 6" to the right of my belt buckle to carry a P85 which is basicly the same size as the P89. It hides almost as well as the P97 I carry most days. Although the slide is a bit thicker, the P89 is really not that much bigger or harder to conceal than most double stack autos regardless of what "they" tell you.

P89

Great gun, although a bit difficult to conceal. I would definitely wear my clothes a bit loose. I like the Hawaiian shirt idea.

Thanks for the responses. Assuming I stay in WI, and assuming they pass CCW... well anyway. Assuming those things are true, then I generally wear fairly loose flannel shirts untucked just about all year, so having a heavyer, baggy shirt shouldn't really be a problem for me. If I move down south.... I think I'll just need a smaller gun. As I said before when I am down there in the summer, LOOKING outside makes me break into a sweat.

Isn't that a good way to get "made" these days though? (If that really matters to you, that is). Fanny packs seem to be passé (at least in my small town) and if I saw anyone with one, I'd assume they're carrying.

Now, my choice would be MAN-PURSE. JUST KIDDING!!!! LOL

What Zundfolge said x 10. Spend a little $ on how you carry your Ruger and you'll be suprised, with little compromise, how you can conceal a larger auto. Good holster (I like kydex), plus strong belt under a moderately loose shirt can easily conceal just about any autoloader. I like the 4 o'clock FBI cant or the straight drop directly at the 12 o'clock position. Practice presenting with which ever style you decide.

If you obey the law {legal CCW} getting "made" while wearing a fanny pack should not be a issue .

I very occasionally pack my P90, and I just do Mexican carry with it, and it works fine. I find that baggy pants (especially cargo pants) in addition to a loose shirt works best. I am not necessarily advocating the Mexican carry, but I am a large man, and it just works best for me.

Boy, you sure hit that nail on the head. Hardest thing for me to do when I first started carrying...

ROTFL. I saw that episode about 5 hours after reading this reply the first time. And I wasn't thinking about it when I made my joke.

Generally not, but it might be to some people, which is why I added in parentheses "If that really matters to you, that is." Some people get really freaky if they think they're "made," and some anti-gun people get really really freaky if they think they've "made" someone else - laws not withstanding.:banghead:

I just need to say this:

Fanny Packs have been out of fashion for about 20 years now. If you are wearing a fanny pack, you are either a) over 65 or b) oblivious to fashion trends.

I mean hell, you might as well conceal your 1911 in a huge bulge in your white leisure suit.

I can "make" people who ccw with fanny packs, you know why? BECAUSE THEY"RE WEARING AN &$#@! FANNY PACK. Either get a smaller gun or a different holster. If you are comfortable enough wearing a fanny pack (which are uncomfortable to begin with) you could probably just as easily don a sport coat, which will cover your weapon more effectively (and if it's summer in the south, invest in linen). You know why Bond carries a PPK? Because he can conceal it under snappy clothing. We don't all have to dress like Bond, but we don't have to dress like Bubba either.

I use a Bianchi Hawk shoulder rig for my P89. It conceals well under a light jacket for winter carry. I just ordered an Uncle Mikes IWB, so I will see how that works out. Usually It's pretty hot down here in florida, so I just carry a snub either IWB or OWB with a loose t shirt or polo shirt. I'll let you know how the Mikes measures up.

I use a Uncle Mikes holster IWB holster some, and the problem I have, is my Ruger P97 CCW has a High Visability front sight, and it wears or tears a hole in them.

When I do carry my P-85, I do it in a K&D Holster's Cochise Defender, and thanks to me; you can as well! (I was the first order for P85/89 - he got the blue gun for my holster. I'm special. Yay!)

I carry it IWB at about 4:30 with a fairly steep forward cant and it conceals well and carries comfortably all day. The design of the holster is tuckable, but I think the P-89 is a bit big for that.

Kevin's work is top notch - have a look.

Update

Got my Uncle Mikes size 5 today, and it worked great. I wore a loose shirt and had it on my 3 o'clock. Concealed with no problem and it was pretty comfortable. One thing I noticed about the Uncle Mikes IWB, is it's very soft. This goes a long way towards the comfort factor. Sure was nice to carry the "89" today.

I noticed that when I carried my P89 in a generic holster IWB. The mag release would catch when was drawing it. It was worth the extra $$ to me, to get a molded holster for the Ruger P89 for that reason alone.
