Well, after at least a dozen letters sent over the last 3-4 years, my "honorable" Congressperson (actually a hard core leftist Democrat) has finally seen fit to grace me with a response. I guess she took lessons from Chuckie Schumer in what it means to "support the 2nd. Amendment to the United States Constitution".

Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to a renewal of the semi-automatic assault weapons ban. I appreciate having the benefit of your views. Like you, I support the 2nd. Amendment to the United States Constitution which acknowledges the right to keep and bear arms. However, I also believe that the U.S. Congress should support sensible & reasonable steps to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and children.

As you know, the federal law banning the sale of semi-automatic assault weapons, known as the federal assault ban was passed as part of the Violent Crime and Law Enforcement Act of 1994. The assault weapons ban will "sunset" unless Congress passes legislation renewing the law.

Under the assault weapons ban, domestic gun manufacturers are required to stop production of semi-automatic weapons and ammunition clips that hold more than 10 rounds, except for military or police use. Assault weapons and ammunition clips that hold more than 10 rounds produced prior to September 13, 1994 can still be possessed and sold.

I appreciate your concerns that this law specifically targets firearms that are only involved in a small percentage of crimes and are more widely used by individuals who hunt. However, under the provisions of this law, assault weapons are defined very specifically. Only semi-automatic guns with multiple assault features are banned under the current law. The law provides specific exemption to 670 types of hunting rifles and shotguns that continue to be manufactured nine years later.

I appreciate having the benefit of your views. Please do not hesitate to contact me again if I can help you in any way.

Sincerely,

Nita M. Lowey

It's interesting to note however, that even the avowed gun grabbers like Lowey are trying to portray themselves as supporters of the RKBA. This tells me that the Democrats realize that gun control is a losing issue for them in the upcoming elections.

In other words, we are on the offensive! We have momentum on our side & we need to press this advantage home for the next 10 months!!!

Haven't written your elected reps.? Do it! What's that... you have already written them? Well write them again! Make those phone calls! Send those faxes! Hell, try dropping by your Congressman or Senator's local office & submit your views in person!!!

To this end, I remind you of The Essential "End the AW Ban" Contact List & Sample Letter Thread

We get one crack at this fight folks. Let's not blow it!

My HONORABLE (and I mean that) congressman voted against the 1994 AWB and voted FOR the 1996 bill to repeal it. I wrote and got a canned "we're not voting the renewal in" response. Good.

I like how their response plays "crimiinal and children" into the 1st paragraph while omitting that they ban prevents NONCRIMINAL ADULTS from buying said weapons. Ask them how "multiple features" of assault weapons is actually "two" (which 'round here is called "a couple")... and just how much more deadly a 'comfy grip' is on a gun.

Maybe if the AWB actually made a crminal owning a semi-auto rifle "doubleplusungood" her argument would make sense.

Meh, let's just start a grassroots campaign pointing out how the AWB was ineffective because it didn't actually target criminals by making it doubleplusungood for them to own a firearm. Them owning one now is no worse than them owning one in 1992.

tell her she can ban as many ammunition clips that hold more than 10 rounds as she wants as long as she doesn't ban any magazines.

Oh, and be sure she knows you ain't falling for that crap.

Reading her reply carefully, she really doesn't give an answer as to how she will vote on renewing the AWB. Given what was mentioned about her political leanings, seems to me that she's trying to duck the issue now and avoid any political backlash, while getting ready to vote in favor of renewing the ban. :barf:

given that she is a co-sponsor of H.R. 2038 (the expanded AWB), i doubt we'll be getting a no vote from her.

It does strike me as funny as most of these letters posted here do not say "Yes" or "No" yet are clear as to which way they lean. That's politics, I guess.....

What if you write a quick letter kind of like this:

Dear Congressman,

Please tell me if you are going to support the renewal the Assault Weapons Ban or not. I need to know how to vote in the next election and will not be casting my vote for anyone that supports it's renewal.

If they are for the ban, do they even respond?

It's interesting to note however, that even the avowed gun grabbers like Lowey are trying to portray themselves as supporters of the RKBA.
They always portray themselves as supporters of the RKBA. Very, very, few members of congress will admit they want all guns removed from civilian hands. In fact I can only think of one or two offhand.

I'd rather deal with them. At least they tell the truth and you know where they are coming from.

I'm lucky... I have a good rep, and I write him all the time about various issues...

he's already told me via phone that he has no intention of renewing the AWB, or any variant.

He said that regardless of other peoples views on AWs, it's no one's business but mine, and If i want a hundred of em, I should be able to do so.

At least there's a FEW good ones in the PRK

I suppose one could write a letter asking specifically whether or not he/she was going to vote for the ban. Then inform him/her that lack of an answer would be taken as support for the passage of the ban.

I may just try it...

"Oh, sure, I support your right to have guns. Of course I do! Just not THIS one. <snatch> Or THAT one <grab> or the one in the corner over THERE. <sneak attack> Have a nice day, and enjoy your uninfringed 2nd ammendment rights."
