consensus on older marlin model 336A's?

There's a couple of 'em chambered in 30-30 in the used rack of the local gun emporium for $199 each. Both have nice walnut stocks and are in pretty good shape, just a little bluing wear in the usual spots.

They're of the older design, with the shortened mag tube where the barrel extends a good 10" or so beyond the magazine.

I wouldn't mind another lever gun, and the price seems right. Should I seek out and grab one of these older design guns or maybe get a 70's vintage pre-safety model of the more traditional design?

Any thoughts?

Sweet guns. That barrel is kinda heavy, and it makes it pretty long overall. I put a Williams receiver sight on the one I owned. It requires a taller front sight with the receiver sight. IIRC Bishop either designed the stock or made aftermarket wood available on the A's. I'd pick up another given the chance.

Excellent shooters.

I have one from the early 1950s in 35 Remington and it is a great short range deer or pig gun. Mine has the short magazine tube as well.

I have shot several big piggies with that rifle and it is a very good, dependable rifle. Sure, its heavy, but its also made of all steel and wood - no pot metal or plastics...it will last you forever.

Good price, too, if they're in good condition.

I recently picked up a pre-safety Glenfield variant that's been cut down to 16" and professionally scoutified, and I gotta tell you that it's just charming the pants off of me. There's no way to say no to 'em...
