I've had a recurring itch for a little CZ bolt action I saw chambered in .22 Hornet the only thing keeping me is the price tag... any thoughts on the caliber or an alternative to the CZ bolt gun?

Scratch the itch

I did several years ago only with a Ruger. After hand loading myself half to death I traded the Ruger in for the CZ. It was the smartest move I could have made.

The CZ is a great gun, for a budget alternative I would look for a Savage model 25 or 40. The .22 Hornet is a neat little cartridge, but most factory ammo sucks. Some of the premium stuff is good, but expensive and hard to find. If you are going to shoot a hornet, you need to reload.

DO IT BUY THE CZ, you won't regret making that purchase.
You can go for a Savage mdl 40 for about 370 bucks, but it is a single shot, no sights scope only and mine had extraction problems out of the box, but it is one heck of an accurate rifle straight from the box.

Do you handload? If yes the Hornet is one fun round to shoot, it is deadly on varmints up to coyote size out to 150 + yd,(I can't see farther than that any way). You can shoot every thing from 30-33 grain @ 3000 + fps to 2750 or so 40 - 45gr ballistic or soft points.

Hey win71, Problem with the Ruger?

Accuracy. The groups were horrible. In fact, after I got the CZ I started shooting the assortment of left over hand loads I had tried in the Ruger and almost without exception every one shot groups half the size as the Ruger did. I used the same scope on both rifles.

I did not particularly care for the two piece non rotating bolt on the Ruger either. Some say it does not contribute much in the accuracy department.

I recommend the CZ also. I own two in 22 Hornet along with a Ruger 77. The CZ's get shot reguraly. The Ruger not so much. Also have a TC Contender in Hornet. I'm a 22 Hornet fan :)

Hornet Fan

I have had Hornets in a number of rifles from old win. 43s and 70s to contenders. I now am shooting an Anschutz and it is very accurate but the wind will eat you alive and even more so in the contender pistol. Fun guns to shoot but I agree with the post above that you MUST handload. You can shoot a hornet cheaper than you can shoot a .22 mag if you handload. I have not had the CZ in a hornet but have had some big guns in CZ and the quality is there. If you hand load buy it and enjoy, if you dont.....I probably wouldnt get a hornet.
