Hey y'all,

What's the consensus on these? Do they shoot the 7.62x51mm as well?
Seen one for $400, synth stock, no optics. No particulars yet... What say you? thanks!

Had one briefly . Accuracy left a lot to be desired at 100 yards . I quickly got rid of it .

God bless
Wyr

I have one in 270. The problem, with the 7400 is it has (for me anyway) an very light barrel. Mine will shoot 2" or less at 100 yds which while not outstanding is okay for most hunting. That's for the first 4-5 shots though. After that the zero shifts and the groups open up. Not much of a issue with hunting but it makes it hell to zero. After a 3 rd group you need to let the barrel cool if you want to get a zero.

SInce you have to clean these from the muzzle end, a used one may have had its muzzle banged up by an over-zealous shooter with one of those 3-piece aluminum cleaning rods.

Check out the muzzle to make sure it's not banged up. Also check out the guide bars where the bolt rides at the inside top of the receiver - should be smooooth.

I love mine in 30-06. It's a hunting rifle - made for a few shots at a time. Not a competitive or battle shooter like a Garand or AR.

I have one in 30-06 that's good for a 1 1/2in groups at 100yds with win 150gr factory, and 180gr silvertips. I got it cheap cheap and its in synthetic. Its a back-up rifle in grizz country. I had one years ago that couldn't get anything smaller than about a 2 1/2in group and I traded it. Important that you let the barrel cool between shots or they may end up anywhere. Don't get one that has been fired "Rambo Style", multiple rapid firing, which seems to warp the barrel.

I shoot a model 760 which is basically a pump version of this rifle. Accuracy with factory loads is around 2". I shot a .374 inch group with handloads.

Last month I inherited my Dad's 7400 in .30-06. It isn't a match rifle, but it sure hits those deer. And elk. And most tin cans and milk jugs and such.

I remember borrowing it on the last day of deer season in 2001, and taking four downhill shots on a running buck. One shot hit the shoulder, one hit a lung. He turned into the aspen and collapsed, dead. It got our venison that year. It's a nice rifle, if that's what you want it for. I'm going to keep it.

The 760 may be a little more accurate because it has a true floating barrel. My 760 was always more accurate than my two 742's (the semi-auto model before the 7400) because of this.
