Hi guys, my dad got a Remington 7400 30-06 in a trade for a junk car. It's in great shape, MAYBE two boxes of shells through it. Comes with scope rings and everything.

What type of optics should we put on it? I was thinking like a 2-7 or maybe even something lowerpowered.

What about modifications to the rifle. Anything recommended. Haven't got to feel the trigger yet. Imagine it is horrible.

Anyone know of a reliable aftermarket mag?

I have two Eagles that I still have kicking around here somewhere. I didn't use them or sell them with the 7400 because they were frankly JUNK, and I'd not inflict that on the next buyer. They were hard to insert, impossible to seat, and impossible to remove. Oh, and they weren't terribly reliable, either. My recommendation is to stick with the factory magazine.

I've got a Leupold 2-7 on my Ruger M77.
I've been very satisfied with it.

I used a 1.5-4.5 Weaver for years. After I reached my late 40s, I thought a bit more magnification would be helpful.

I've also used a Bushnell 3-9 on another rifle. It doesn't seem as good optically as the Leupold, but I haven't had any trouble with it in the field or on the range.

Shoot it just as it is. Lots of places sell factory mags. I have used mine for many years, and find its a wonderful woods carbine, and surprisingly accurate.
It is NOT a MBR. Its a woods rifle. \
I have a Bushnell Banner 3 X 9 scope on mine, in low rings, using a Redfield mount.
Forget about hanging all that tactical crap on it.

Someone off the TFR forum had one that he modified to accept a pistol grip 870 stock. Actually, I think the stock had to be dremeled just a little bit to go on the 7400. Pretty cool looking, makes a deer rifle into an EBR!
