I saw a Ruger M77 .308win heavy barrel w/ a Leupold VX-I 3x9x40 for $599.00

I really like the way the gun felt, I really have no need for it other than a fun gun. I already have a .30-06 to take into the woods.

This would just be for trying to punch holes in papper at 300 yards.

What are your thoughts? Deal or no deal. Many reviews say the trigger sucks, but I thought it broke clean. It did have alot of creap but then would hit a point and break.

Is this a regular M77 or the M77 Hawkeye? The Hawkeye is actually a major redesign and a much more accurate rifle than the M77 and M77 Mk II.

If it's not a Hawkeye, I'd say walk away. You can get a brand new Savage .308 for $550 off Gunbroker, and a Leapers 3-9x40 scope for $60 or so. This particular Leapers scope has incredible optics and can also hold up to high recoil.

I guess other than usually crappy factory triggers I've never had any complaints over any Rugers I've owned as far as accuracy goes.

Ruger 77v tang safety .220 swift
Ruger 77 MKII 7mm Mag
Ruger 77 Hawkeye .204
Ruger 77/22 Mag

All of them shoot very well

Depending on the condition it's probably not to bad a deal no matter what model it is, not a great deal though either.

deal. and then sell the scope and replace it w/ one that tops out somehwere between 12 and 20. a 6-18x would be about perfect.

so what... for the money you'll have into it, picking up a timney or whatever trigger to put in still makes it a worthwhile deal.

many people that talk about bad triggers don't truly know what a bad trigger is - they just parrot what everybody else says.

a trigger does nothing for the rifle's accuracy. it might help you to be a better shot, but it doesn't make the rifle any more accurate. w/ enough trigger discipline, a good shot can overcome all but the absolute worst triggers.

again... deal. jump on it, part out the scope, and re-invest the money to defray the expense of a new scope.

Good scopes aren't necessarily expensive anymore. Advances in optics mean you can get high-quality scopes for $60 to $70 that outperform many of the high-end scopes from just a few years ago. Honestly, I'd get a NEW Savage or Ruger Hawkeye and start from there.

Any heavy barrel Ruger used is worth at least $400-500 and your scope is worth $100-125 used. Depending on the vintage of your rifle it may be accurate or it may only shoot 2MOA. For $500 you would be FAR better off with a Remington 700SPS Varmint. .75MOA out of the box. A Savage 10FP is a little more but is more accurate at sub .50MOA with hand loads. Personally I have owned both and kept the Remington. I use factory ammo and did not see much difference in accuracy and prefer the feel of the 700 action.

For a precision rifle, there is absolutely nothing under $180 worth buying new even if you are trying to be cheap unless you spent your last dollars on the rifle and just want to break it in. For $70 all you get is an adequate 200 yd deer hunting scope.

That's just plain ridiculous. $60 to $70 scopes are sold for that price because they use cheap components, and are assembled in a third world country. Actually, if anything, advances in optics have resulted in some incredibly expensive scopes.

The cheapest scope I would consider is the Nikon Prostaff at around $150. Anything less is junk in my opinion.

Rugers are under rated and can be suprisingly accurate. I need more info on exactly which rifle to say if it is a good buy or not.

THanks for the replies, I am conserned about the quality of the rifle, not scope.

I am not looking to buy a cheap scope. I want to make sure I buy a decent rifle.
