I have a PSL that I'm considering trading for an AR. I'm not a big fan of the AR platform or the .223/5.56x45 caliber, but it turns out that I'm not as big a fan of my PSL as I thought I was. To my knowledge, PSL's and 'base line' AR's are about equal dollar wise, not much difference in ammo cost either. Most AR's are WAY more accurate, not to mention lighter, though PSL's have a longer effective range, and pack more of a whallop. Accessories are more plentiful and cheaper for AR's than PSL's. .22lr adaptors are available for AR's.

I know I've probably made a good argument for trading, but I'm still not sure it's what I want to do, and I haven't found a trading partner yet either. Give me some more pro's and con's and help me make my decision.

Thanks

AR's are a dime-a-dozen. PSL's are never going to be as common. Keep the PSL, I wish I had.

If you really want an AR but cash is tight, maybe find one you like and put it on layaway? I bet you'll be glad you did, especially since you won't have the chance to regret trading/selling your PSL.

I have and shoot both! Don't knock the PSL's accuracy, mine did 1 3/4" at 120 yards with some light ball. It's a great rifle to shoot at steel plates with at decent range.

But I do shoot my AR more often, I found it ran on Tula .223 and shot ALOT of it, never had an issue and had more than reasonable plinking accuracy. I really wish I could find a nice optic as well suited to my rifle and cartridge like the PSO PSL scopes. About the only analogous optic we have in america is the ACOG which I just can't afford.

My opinion? Keep it, let your friends/shooting buddies know it's for sale. Then buy parts here and there, build yourself a nice rifle with affordable, quality parts and learn a thing or two about the platform.

You'd be surprised how nice of a rifle you could build for not alot of money.

Keep the PSL. If you don't like the scope, buy a BP-02 mount from Kalinka Optics and mount whatever you want on it. Fact is, it's a very versatile weapon. Lightweight, accurate, long-ranged, and comes with iron sights. It's also very reliable if you take care of it and make sure you get good magazines (or fix them if you get a bad one).

The magazine flaw is actually quite simple to fix, if you encounter one: there can be weld pits inside the magazine body, just under the feed lips. These can catch the rim of the 7.62x54R cartridge and prevent it from being smoothly stripped. The solution is to take a needle file and smooth out the front edge of the pits so the rim won't get caught. Not hard at all, and once you're done you've got a high-powered rifle with AK reliability. Mine eats PRVI Partizan soft points all day long.

As Cheesebigot said, AR-15's are a dime a dozen, and they'll always be available. PSL's, not necessarily.

You can build a cheap AR for 600, you can't build a PSL for under 700, and that's without glass.

I keep reading about "packs more punch" but honestly, if you're just shooting at the range, why would that be necessary?

A 223 bullet will hit a target just as well as a 308 projectile, unless you're going for damage.

Just get an AR, not a $600.00 AR, a decent AR. $600.00 will buy my BCG and trigger.
Then, keep the PSL just in case you need something to stir the campfire.
(just kidding) They are pretty cool, just not my cuppa tea.

I'm an AR guy through and through but those PSLs are really cool I'd love to own one some day.

I have one PSL and 3 AR's. I shoot my AR's more, but honestly, I have more fun with the PSL.

Keep it, and save for an AR if you really want one. I'd miss my PSL if it was gone.

Whatever floats your boat, but to me, PSLs will always have more character and will be more fun than an AR.

I have a PSL, and they're by far much better than an AR in respects to its character, availability, and caliber. As everyone has said before me, AR's aren't going anywhere, but
PSL's will eventually run out. Build an AR piece by piece, it will be worth it.

Cannot say I miss my PSL...I sold it off to purchase a Garand. I think that the M1 Rifle is a far better rifle than the PSL was. I like not having to break down and clean every time I shoot them due to corrosive ammo.

The PSL was neat and fun but not a "keeper" for me.

I still have two AR-15's that I really enjoy shooting more than the PSL.

Whatever trips your trigger - there are so may choices.
