Gun accidents down, but other home accidents on the rise

Contrary to what you might expect from all the news about gun violence, accidental deaths from guns in the home are relatively uncommon, and have actually gone down slightly in recent years, according to a new study. But other deadly accidents at home, including poisonings, falls, and burns, are far more common, and on the rise. The good news: some simple measures can help prevent most of them.

I recall the NAS NRC panel study "Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review" 2004 which pointed out that there were 65 million handguns in private hands, wth 6,500 handgun homicides, or 1 handgun homicide per year per 10,000 handguns. The figures for 2011 are 114 million handguns in private hands, with 6.220 handgun homicides, or 1 handgun homicide per 18,000 handguns.
Handgun homicide numbers are down (with an increase in population, so rates are down even more) Contrary to what you might expect from all the news about gun violence.

Where are the news media getting the increase in gun violence that justifies a moral panic to DO SOMETHINK NOW!!!!!

Good to hear from the lefty CR. Hard to believe ,but at one time they evaluated guns! You gotta be really old to remember.

To many times the owner is either cleaning it with a round chambered, showing off, handing it loaded to someone who doesn`t know it loaded and pulls the trigger or is just plain stupid.
Not all who own a weapon practice the rules of gun safety. There aren`t many so when something dumb happens, they have nobody to blame but themselves.

Yes, and clumsiness, too. Falling is unbelievably dangerous.

I am surprised Obamacare hasn't criminalized it.

As far as gun accidents go, I think more parents are locking up their guns. A lot more.

As far as the rise in other accidents go, I can't help but wonder if it isn't due, in part, to people getting older and living in their homes longer. My dad lived in his own home until a year and a half ago. He moved out when he was 91. We always worried about him trying to walk downstairs to the basement all the time. That's a tragedy waiting to happen. I'm sure many other old folks have been in the same situation.

He's doing well in assisted living now
