Contemplating a neglected Remington 514 .22--where to get a bolt?

My first gun, a 514, Dad gave it to me, brand new, guessing about mid-'60s. Still have it (and the bolt).

About shooting at the landfill, my high school actually had a rifle club and a range in a basement under the boys' gymnasium. I actually took my 514 to school, with faculty permission, to shoot there. The police dept would send an officer out to the school to give us safety instruction. This was about 1969. Nobody would consider such a thing now.

We had US Army JROTC and an out door 50 foot range where the Cadets shot the 513T and Winchester 52 D. Early on they allowed guys to bring their own rifles on specific days. I took in a 52 Sporter for about two weeks.

I also took in my old Savage Click-Clack and Winchester 67. There were a host of other rifles brought in. We had everything from winchest 1890s to Nylon 66s show up.

The actual reason for allowing this was so that the guys that claimed to need no instruction or special rifles could shoot for score and get their clocks cleaned by selected Cadets that had trained over the summer on the 513Ts.

Neat to see the "I can shoot the eye out a squirrel at 50 yards" guys meekly asking to be taught how to really shoot. Can you tell I was one of the pre trained guys?

Loaned a buddy money to buy a 510 with redfield micrometers on it and the sun of a gun actually PAID ME BACK! I was looking forward to doing the Snydely Whiplash on him and his little rifle, too!

Now one of his daughters thinks it is hers and I will never clutch it to my black hearted chest again.

Did some more work on my 514 yesterday after watching a couple of relevant YouTube videos. It had been so long since this rifle had seen the light of day that I couldn't remember exactly how to take it down or how to disassemble the bolt. Turns out that both tasks are very simple. BTW, I also found a copy of the owners manual (4 whole pages :D) which I've attached here.

The firing pin, mainspring and internal bore of the bolt all were coated with what probably was a mix of old oil and burned powder. Using what I learned, a little elbow grease and a generous helping of Hoppes No. 9, everything cleaned up nicely. All appeared to be in fine shape so I put a thin coat of oil on things and put the bolt and rifle back together.

I checked the bore and breech earlier to make sure there was no pitting or obvious damage so now I have to get some ammo. Call me an optimist, but I went to Walmart yesterday looking for some .22LR. No joy. Guess I'll have to order some on line. I really want to take my "new" rifle to the range for a workout.

ABTOMAT, is that some orange colored stuff in those screw heads? I know I am not seeing rust with that nice butt plate job. Say it ain't so? :)

That's weird, it's only in that photo. The screws are so clean you could eat off them.

When it says to tighten the takedown screw "firmly" just how firmly do they mean? The action's only supported at the very front and very back of the stock and that screw will bend the barrel the more you tighten.

Wow Bluzman, that rifle and I are the same age. I was born July 13, 1958. It's probably in better shape than me, lol.

Wow, I was born July 13 too, but a good bit more recently.

I shot a 514 once and really liked it. The 24 inch barrel is probably overkill for a 22, but it gives you a great sight radius, and with the Redfield irons the owner had installed, you couldn't miss if you wanted to.

Ordered some .22LR from SGAmmo on Sunday afternoon. UPS tracking says it should be here no later than Friday (hopefully sooner). Anxious to get my 514 to the range. :D
