Contemplating home security setups

Yeah, I too am reading this interior fortification stuff in wonder... Who is going to be hiding in a safe room whilst gangs of people are trying to kick through the door and wall?????

Why aren't you blasting them with an AK47 or 12 gauge? Ain't no person in his right mind is going to continue to 'assault' into my house after I unload a magazine of .308 from my PTR91 in his/their direction...

The fantasy of watching someone with a sawzall cutting through the wall while you're on the otherside is complete fantasy... Just shoot the dumb***. That'll end the fight pretty quickly.

This topic has been talked to death.... here's a recap of inexpensive and effective things you can do for your residence:

1) Live in the best neighborhood you can afford
2) Don't advertise your valuables. Don't leave windows and doors/garage doors open unnecessarily. Don't put your big plasma TV and computer boxes on the curbside. Don't carry your gun boxes outside; load them into your car in the garage, or conceal them in a blanket roll. Etc.
3) Exterior and interior lights, motion lights, lights on timers, etc.
4) Fence
5) Quality locks and deadbolts
6) Solid doors with long screws
7) Alarms on doors and windows
8) Real alarm system, or even fake alarm system with fake cameras

Make your house appear to be a hard target.

Most of these can be done relatively inexpensively.

iiibdsiil,

All but the reinforced walls of the master closet could be done with a couple hours work on the weekend and with minimal expense. Another thread gave me the idea to put heavily anchored wire mesh behind the drywall of the master closet. That would at least mean that someone would spend at least five minutes trying to get in.

I do plan on having an inspector or three out before closing regardless of what I get.

Sorry, my point was that the builder is going to have a field day if you do any of your own work on the house, especially in one of those new house neighborhoods where there is only one builder for the whole project.

We tried it with my ex's place. They wouldn't even let us run speaker wire through the ceiling for the living room. Guess what that one cost...

quick tip: if you have exterior cameras that are hidden, put up fake cameras strategically placed so that as the criminals are 'avoiding' the fake cameras they come into clear view of the real ones.

Here's what I said in context. (Doesnt like being made a fool, I do that enough myself!);) V

The probelm I have with mesh or any other "above & beyond" fortification type idea is that this means the person is coming at the house not at a normal point of entry (A door or window). That would make me think they know how buildings are built & honestly, if a person with even a little construciton background and a few tools is determined to get into your house, and is willing to make noise doing it......they are going to get in.

Things are just not built for that level of assault. Typically buildings are built to withstand mother nature and "normal" loads / forces....they are not typically constructed to prevent disassembly. Constructing a house to prevent disassembly would be very costly.

Do the stuff that makes sense, secure what is reasonable, but I wouldn't spend a lot of money doing fortifications.
