I have a couple of 10 round mags (purchased during the hi-cap ban) for my SW40VE that I had never really looked at closely until tonight. After taking them apart it looks like the only thing that's keeping them from holding 14 or so rounds is the dimples on the sides, which prevent the follower from travelling any lower and accepting more than 10 rounds.

I thought about just cutting these dimples out with a Dremel, but the mag is scored on the front and back in a manner which will cause the mag to fall apart if the dimples are cut out.

I have a MIG welder and these appear to be steel mags, so would it be feasible to tack weld where the mag body is scored, so it won't fall apart? I assume I'd have to grind the welds down low enough to gain clearance and allow the mag to be inserted. Is this a dumb idea?

It might work, but it sounds like a lot of trouble, with the distinct possbility of completely ruining the magazine or worse, having it come apart at the wrong time. It seems to me it would be easier to simply buy 14 round mags now that you can. (Besides, if you encounter a BG who can't be stopped with 10 rounds of .40, throw the gun at him and run like heck!)

You may want to keep them just incase the new political party that may get into office in the up and coming election tries to create a new high cap ban. Or maybe in 20 years they will be come a collectors item of another failed attempt to stop crime by restricting inanimate objects. They also make good doorstops.

Really I would not mess with them at the moment they are good usable mags and messing with them may turn them into junk. I would rather have an extra mag with 10 rounds than no mag at all. I have 2 10 round mags for my Glock 19 and I use them to train with for mag reloads. If I dorp them and they break I am not out a good high cap.

Enjoy your day

buy new mags and just use those as beaters or sell them to people who live 10 round states.
