Maybe I'm not tracking here but the OP has a Super Blackhawk. I have a pair of sequentially numbered Bisley Blackhawk convertible revolvers. They look nice sitting in my safe and even better sitting on a log!
I love the way the shorter 4&5/8ths" handles.
But, Ohio mandates a 5" minimum barrel for deer hunting.
I think a 5&1/2" SS 45 convertible Bisley, with a banded front sight would be just right. I recently traded into a SS 357mag 4&58ths" with the Sweetest 2lbs 10oz trigger. Zero creep, clean break very consistent. The little bit of creep always bothered me in my 3 other Blackhawks so they got sold off. This one is perfect though, just wish it was a Bisley.
"...possible to buy a kit and install myself?..." Not likely. The grip is not a separate part. You'd need a whole new grip frame. Most Ruger parts require factory installation and they do not sell those parts to anybody. However, Gunparts lists SS Bisley Blackhawk frames at $154.50. Sold out, of course.
Old and new model Blackhawk drawings are here. http://stevespages.com/ruger.html
