Really is it that darn hard not to break the law. If you break the law you reap all that you sowed.

either give them their rights back,or put them to death. I do not believe in ''half'' citizens. You are either ok to live with the rest of us,or you are not.No sentences over ten years,either...I don't want to support bad guys for that long even. Any other sentence over ten years,I'd have automaticly a death sentence. If it's that serious that we don't want you among us for more than ten years,we don't want you among us at all.At the same time,If you're reformed, you are to be considered reinstated as a citizen.

Ok, rbernie, except I didn't ask, "Can you think of examples of felons who are non-violent and are not a threat to society except in our sloppy sense of homemaking", I asked "HOW MANY of the felons being released from prison right now are you ready to have carrying guns?" From tens of thousands, you named ONE.

Go to some parole hearings. Work in some halfway houses. (I have.) As you do it, ask yourself, "Is this guy ready for a gun?"

One more time. Before you can say that everyone who isn't incarcerated is fine to own a gun, you must FIRST make sure that a reasonable percentage of the ones that should stay in do. THIS IS NOT HAPPENING ANYTIME SOON.

Saying that there should be no game laws is to say that there should be no wildlife management at all. Letting everyone shoot anything they wanted didn't work out too well for the American Bison in the 19th century. Be glad you get to hunt at all. America is about as good as it gets. And on THR, we follow the law. PERIOD.

i like the system in va. you have to work at it to get your rights restored. don't wanna work at it? too bad maybe you really don't want em . working to get em back is not a bad litmus test of how "reformed" you are

I actually agree, I have a brother in law who did something stupid, like, the week after he turned 18. The other guys he was with were under-age, so they made an example of him, he picked up a felony B&E, did like 30 days. YEARS later, like 15 or so, he started the process to have it expunged. It was painful and tedious. But he did it. He's never been in trouble since then. He cared enough to go through the process. That in and of itself says something. Most felons don't.

Most felons don't.

VERY true and that why i like the system here. it allows a person the oppurtunity to earn back what he threw away. makes you appreciate it wanna keep it. helps society as well as the guy working to become part of society again protects and serves both

I know of a couple people that were charged with felonies and plead bargined only because they couldn't afford a lawyer. Their crimes were by association. Their emlpoyer was padding the books and blamed them for it so he could walk.

What good is PUNISHMENT if it is a slap on the hand??:banghead: If you are a felon you should pay. If you can get the conviction....say pardoned, then you can again own a firearm. This would be OK, otherwise NO FIREARMS.:fire: Others will disagree I am sure but who made the choice to get into trouble so serious as to become a felon?

So how much did Martha learn if at 12:00:01 she had her people cut the ankle alarm off and not wait until the next morning to have it removed by the proper officials? That was her statement as to how she viewed it all.

A felony is a crime for which you may be imprisoned for more than one year. Find me any case anywhere that someone actually got a felony conviction for stealing cable.

mljdeckard:
I don't have time to do case searches, but it's apparently serious enough that there are lawyers advertising on the net who specialize in cable TV theft. Get convicted and you're a felon.

Polygamy is a felony, too, (just ask Warren Jeffs), but there's plenty of it going on in your home state. So: Marrying two women=no guns.

I believe the bottom line is that this thread started out with a very stupid and controversial poll; There are too many gray areas.

Granted you may have worked in halfway houses or whatever. Convicted rapists, arsonists, murderers, pederasts, etc. are hardly in the same category as the guy who got caught stealing some free cable TV or was caught tapping his 17 year old girlfriend on prom night, however.

I personally think this poll is a trap. I think this is done by either a anti gun lobbyist group or a left wing media entertainment show. By asking a bunch of gun nuts whether we think felons should own guns, they will use it on their next attack. "out of large number of right wing extremist on certain well known gun forums believe that violent criminals should be allowed to own guns..."

Stranger things have happened...:D

I cant post an opinion that couldn't also be considered a strong political opinion so I will say no, under no circumstances should a felony offender be allowed to own a firearm.

And Josef Stalin was your...brother??? uncle??? cousin???

Violent: If they have done their time, have been clean for a period of time, maybe 5 years, then OK.
Non-violent, OK, just not while in jail.
We are very quick to restrict rights as long as the restrictions affect the other guy and not us. That’s why we are in a constant battle on the 2nd.

if dry-alcoholics can become CIC ... it should be okay for past-felons to own guns.

I would set it up like this:

Violent felonies and burglary offenses: No guns for Life
Simultaneous Possession of Guns and illegal drugs: No guns for life
Felony Theft and Felony Drug offenses: 10 year ban on gun ownership
All other non-violent felonies (after probation or parole is completed): gun ownership permitted

Don't commit a felony and it wont be a problem. Nor will becoming a leo or a lawyer or many other fields. And unless someone is completely mentally deficient they know they will lose some of their rights if they do get convicted. It's not exactly a big secret!

I voted no .....

If you are socially maladjusted enough to commit a felony, how can you guarantee that you won't commit an even further lapse of judgement by committing another felony, possibly one now WITH a firearm?

If you can't understand the basics of right and wrong, no matter how non-violent the felony was, I don't want to be the one to see the results of what might happen when you throw a loaded gun into that environment.

You really need to "live the high road" if you're going to own and/or carry a weapon.

How many times are we going to do this thread. If you did the crime and served your time then you should be allowed to have your rights restored, Non violent that is. Maybe one day there can be a right restoration board for non violent felons. You may as well take their cars also, lord knows they are more dangerous and require less scrutiny for ownership. What about the people wrong fully convicted, there have been like 20 people released after years of prison on DNA just here in Texas in the last 3 years. What about the ones that weren't released and branded felon becuase they fought and lost even though they never comitted the crime. Its like all you here is well you should have known better, well some people did and still hold the scarlet letter. It's not always black and white, so lets not pretend it is.

Posts: 297 There is a process in place that convicted felons can pursue to try and get their right to own a firearm back.

Hiya B,
Could you or someone please post a link or more info on that ----- from what searching I did on my brothers behalf ----- there is a process where he could ask for a legal hearing in ILLINOIS to try to get back his right to own a firearm BUT he would still NOT BE LEGAL under Federal guildlines --- to get your Federal status changed , only the Govenor {sp?} of IL. can expung a felony ???

Gunfighter, I believe he was talking about the reinstatement process offered through the ATF. However, Congress stopped funding the program about a dozen years ago so you're left with a Presidential Pardon at this point, good luck with that !!

This is a circular argument. We release folk that cannot be trusted to own a firearm, and then we use their presence on the street to deny them specific rights. That is flatly nonsensical.

A more linear approach states that if they can be trusted to be released, then they should be. If they cannot be trusted to be released, then their sentencing should keep them incarcerated.

Anyone that can own a car, buy a gas can, or buy a chain saw should also be able to buy a gun. If you cannot be trusted to buy/own a gun, then we probably shouldn't trust you with other dangerous articles or allow you to walk among us.

I say:I think all the rational arguments boil down to this,we should have no ''half citizens''.
