Saw one for sale today at Gander Mountain for $229. If I hadn't been broke buying Christmas gifts, I'd have put it on lay-away...

Mossberg 50113 .410 bore BANTAMâ„¢ STOCK SLUGSTER, Blued finish, black Bantam-length synthetic stock, 24" Cylinder Bore barrel with adjustable Fiber Optic rifle-style sights

I know all the reasons not to own a .410...
  • long, narrow shot strings...
  • slug loads no more effective than .38SPL +P's...
  • more expensive ammo w/ limited choices...
  • "real men" shoot 12 Gauge 3.5" Super Magnums and LIKE IT!!!

But I have a few reason that get me interested, too...

  • lighter ammo = more in your pocket & ammo pouch...
  • .410 shotguns weigh a lot less than 12ga's...
  • less recoil = more shooting fun...
  • iwannacoolnewgun virus is hard to fight during the holiday season...

OK, guys. I need help. Convince me to walk away...

(why do I feel like I'm asking a group of sharks to help me go vegetarian?...) :uhoh:

If you want it, then get it, but remember it is a .410. You don't have accessories and your ammo will be limited in what it can do. One big plus is that they are just damn fun to shoot. No can will be safe.

When did you ever see us trying to talk someone out of buying another shotgun?

As long as you respect its limits, go ahead.

OK, I'll bite and tell you not to get it.

A cylinder bore 410 is WORTHLESS past 25 yards, and 25 yards is being generous. It would work for skeet shooting, and close range hunting. Slugs, if you want to pay for them, would probably be decent too. A 410 needs a full choke if it doesn't have choke tubes. Save another $100 and get a gun that you can use outside of a few select circumstances.

I myself wouldn't buy it but primarily because I dislike the brand. Other than that the cylinder bore is a real big turn of.
As for the 'real men...12 ga 3 1/2" comment - My observations show that many of these these thumper shooters need the extra to make up for their abilities. I really like the .410 cartridge. Don't currently own one now but I think a .410 rem 870 will fill my need when it arrises. The mossy might be cheaper but you get what you pay for.

Other than the choke tube issue, I say get it. Depending on where you live, it is the perfect gun for dove/quail season.

I'm with H

YES - Buy a new shotgun.

Yes - Get a 870 Express

Wood & Blue for starters, and more versatile with the tighter choked bbl - including slugs .

You can have your cake and eat it too...with a blued gun with soul. :)

My BEST reason:
With the $25 Rebate Gander's will sell you a 28ga 870 for about $30 more.

That's about all I have to say about that.

David

1. You will sell all your other shotguns.

2. You will begin to wear English tweed and only English tweed.

3. You will sell the pump .410 and start collecting exotic side by sides in bizzare guages such as 24 and 18.

Buy it! I've got a .410 pump that just turns me on at skeet. :) No, I don't hunt with it but it is a way fun gun :D
