The first aid kit is based on the Level 2 kit shown here, apparently designed by Nutnfancy:
http://tomtrocineblog.blogspot.com/2010/01/nutnfancy-usk.html

Here is the first in a series of videos by Nutnfancy on that kit:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACerbzgpsak

Coming soon: Thoughts on the kit and its limitations, pics when I have it fully assembled. It packs pretty tight!

I am posting this so I can link friends and because I think it's a good, well-organized well-packed kit, so enjoy and feel free to make suggestions :D

Thanks

Well you said its coming later, but I would like to know your reasoning behind certain items, why you packed it the way you did, and what exactly you plan to use it for.

I know you said Disaster Preparedness, but are we talking about holing up? Bugging out? Is this for urban setting, or when your humping it out in the backcountry?

Stuff like that.

Doesn't hurt to start now, but at any rate I live in a Coastal NC city. Hurricane/evacuation is the most probable scenario, but any sort of "bugging out" due to catastrophe/disaster to me is getting in the car if possible and driving to safety, or E&E if absolutely necessary...this kit is designed to be grab and go. Lots of the basic gear would be fine for hunkering down without power too.

There isn't much bushcraft/wilderness stuff because the idea is mostly escape if necessary, survive as long as possible (hence water purification and enough food for energy purposes for a few days), and deal with any injuries occurring to me or nearby persons until help arrives.

I just don't think there is a very likely scenario I'd be in with my lifestyle where I'd be without help more than 5-10 days at most. But I have wanted to have a good first aid kit in my home or nearby on travels for a long time, and this kit in general will certainly be coming with me on road trips.

Really the name of the game here is pack as light as possible, don't prepare for anything and everything - only the most likely scenarios - but have versatile redundant gear, and everything I might need in one convenient grab and go package.

nice, but I would pack a small .22 cal pistol in there with at least 100 rounds of ammo for hunting. You are also missing IMHO,

small fishhooks and line
Electrolite tablets
Multi-vitamens and rocks! (er minerals!) Especially C
Salt (not just for flavoring that roast skunk, but for keeping it unspoiled for days!)

I would drop the Modafinil and add plain old legal 24-7 cofee/tea or sub-lingual b-12 with Niacen, I would say diet-pills instead but you don't want to have an energy boost that costs that much caloric intake.

Remember that if you are caught with RX medications after the scrip has expired you are not only committing what amounts to a felony in most states but you are doing so while in posession of a firearm. While to many people with common sense it is clear that your purpose in possessing them is for emergency use, a LEO wanting to follow the strict letter of the law and a County Prosecutor looking for a relection has just took another drug dealer off the streets....

Slim Chance of it happening? Yes, but if your that prepared for a major event that is unliklely to happen you should be prepared for Murphey's law, which is more likley to burst your bubble unannounced

Ahh sorry Conwict!, you posted while I was typeing! some of that is still relavent though so I will leave my last post as is!

First things that come to mind:

No layers : rain gear, fleece for cold.
No shelter: no tarp, tent, etc.
No sleeping bag or pad.

Not enough food. Read "The Well-fed Backpacker".
No water filter. No water containers.

Playing cards? Save the weight.

Why two cameras?

Lensatic compass
More effective paired with a map.

Countycomm Shortwave Radio w/ light, 2xAA
Keychain LED on strap
Not sure what the light on the radio is like but a better flashlight may be worthwhile.

Shemagh
Olive drab bandana
Redundant?

I agree with more food and more water, Camelback type bladders are nice for water carriers as they don't take up as much space while empty.

A Photon Freedom and a 4sevens Quark tactical are in my EDC, so no real desire for further redundancy. Good point though.

Why two cameras?

I plan on filling the duffel the rest of the way with more MREs. I know plenty about caloric expenditure/intake and my own limits and needs. At 210lb and a muscular frame I need a LOT even sedentary to maintain, but I frequently do fasted physical activity and my body can handle that. Food is not going to be a limiting factor in my survival - but I agree, more is generally better!

2 cameras are so two people can photograph an area for insurance reasons. Saves time. Or who knows, I may have a need for more than 27 exposures.

Re water, I believe you missed the Stanley 1.2L waterbottle and potassium iodide tabs.

Re layers/shelter, I may put a collapsible raincoat in there, but the 2 contractor bags work as well as mylar emergency blankets or better, and double as ponchos in a pinch. Don't forget, fire is also "shelter." I feel that fleece etc would take up unnecessary room as I typically dress seasonally and the weather here is not very likely to change extremely fast.

Fuzzybunny, antibio ointment is in there.

Ike maybe hunting will be a part of the game plan later but not for now. Fishing is the same deal. I'm not taking this into the backcountry or flying over Canadian wilderness or anything. As for the RX med issue (I do have prescriptions): http://en.allexperts.com/q/Criminal-Law-916/2008/7/expired-prescription.htm - that source says expiration dates are for "safety reasons," not legally binding.

I'm thinking over the salt, multi vits, and electrolytes. Electrolytes are a good idea no doubt, but again salt is more of a long term survival concern, and I don't think I'll develop a serious, survival-impairing vitamin/mineral deficiency while holding out for help.

Thanks everyone :)

Sorry folks, but S&T's just for security and self defense issues. Safety and survival forums abound with real experts to help with your BOBs and DP kits.
