Officer Recovering From Wounds

A plainclothes police officer was recovering early Friday after being shot in the face while investigating a possible drug deal, police said.

The shooting occurred shortly after 11 p.m. when the officer, Michael Keenan, and his partner left their patrol car to approach two men who they saw make a drug deal in North Philadelphia, police said.

The officers were quickly fired upon, and Keenan, a 14-year veteran of the force, was shot in the chin, Police Commissioner Sylvester M. Johnson said.

Keenan, 35, was ferried to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he spent the night.

"Looks like he's going to be just fine," said Mayor John Street, who visited Keenan in the hospital.

Two men accused in the shooting were in police custody, authorities said. One suspect was being questioned by police, while the second was being treated at a hospital for a possible gunshot wound.

The hospital declined to release Keenan's condition on Friday, but he was reported to be fair or stable.
